06/14/07 UMW's Baker Named CAC Co-Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Baker recently graduated from the University of Mary Washington (UMW) with a 3.49 GPA as a business major. He scored his 1,000th career point this past season in just three years at UMW, while leading the team in scoring (14.2 ppg), rebound (8.3 rpg) and assists (102). A two-time all-region selection by D3Hoops.com and a two-time All-CAC selection, Baker was one of ten finalists for the Jostens Award, given annually to the NCAA Division III Player of the Year as well as being named the Dickinson College Tipoff Tournament Most Valuable Player. Off the court, Baker was named to the Who's Who among students in American universities (2006-07), the CAC All-Academic team, UMW's Dean's List, UMW's Athletic honor roll, and received the Ukrops Super Market/First Market Bank scholarship. He was also a member of the Alpha Phi Sigma honor society as well as Sigma Beta Delta. 02/22/07 Catholic Tops UMW Men's Basketball in CAC Semifinal, 69-67 WASHINGTON, DC - The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team saw its season come to an end with a 69-67 loss at Catholic University on Thursday in the Capital Athletic Conference semifinals at the DuFour Center. UMW closes the season with a 16-10 record. The Eagles were led by senior guard and Jostens Award finalist Justin Baker, who scored 20 points and added 14 rebounds with two assists and no turnovers. Also in double figures for the Eagles were Jon Pierce with 13 points and Matt Hale with 12. Catholic was led by Patrick Dwyer's 20 points and 13 rebounds, and Stephen Wheeler's 16 points and 11 rebounds. The Eagles, who led, 32-29 at halftime, shot 43% from the floor in the game, and made eight three pointers. The Cards shot just 33% from the floor, but were aided by shooting 40 free throws to just 14 for the Eagles, as the Cards scored 25 points at the charity stripe. The culmination of the season marks the fifth straight year the Eagles have won at least 15 games, the first time that has happened in the history of the program. BOXSCORE 02/21/07 ![]() Bruen, Baker Named Finalists for Jostens National Players of the Year Award Salem, VA - The top 10 finalists for the prestigious Jostens Trophy were announced today by members of the Rotary Club of Salem, Va. The club is responsible for the initial review of annual nominations and narrowed the pool to 10 men and 10 women finalists. The list found below will be forwarded to the 34-person national selection committee, which will complete the selection process by picking a men and women's Jostens Trophy winner. The award takes into account three vital parts: basketball ability, academic prowess and community service. With the score tied at 75, Hale buried a three pointer to give the Eagles a three point lead. After the Eagles fouled with one second left, York's Joe Yeck connected on his second foul shot, but time ran out with the Eagles with the ball and the two-point lead. Sophomore center Kiernan Whitworth led the Eagles with 16 points, while Hale and Justin Baker each scored 14 points. Freshman Pat Kelly led York with 18 points, and Chad McGowan added 17. UMW improves to 16-9 on the season, while the Spartans' season ends at 16-10. UMW split with Catholic University during the regular season, with each team winning on its home court. BOXSCORE 02/17/07 UMW Men's Basketball Falls to Catholic in Regular Season Finale, 74-61 WASHINGTON, DC - The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team fell at Catholic University, 74-61, on Saturday to close the regular season with a 15-9 overall record, and 9-7 mark in conference play. Catholic jumped out to a 15-point halftime lead, shooting well over 50% from the floor in the opening stanza. For the game, the Cards shot 49% from the floor, and despite being outrebounded by UMW, 33-30, came away with the 13-point win. The Eagles shot just 36% for the game. A.J. Fitzgerald led the Eagles with 13 points and five rebounds, while Justin Baker had 12 points and seven rebounds and Kiernan Whitworth 12 points and six rebounds. Jon Pierce was the fourth Eagle in double figures with 10 points. Nick Olivero led Catholic with 16 points. By virtue of UMW's 1-3 head-to-head records with Marymount University (3-1) and St. Mary's College (2-2), who both won on Saturday and also stand with 9-7 CAC records, the Eagles fall to the sixth seed in the CAC Tournament, which begins on Tuesday. UMW was swept in the regular season by the Seahawks. The Eagles will visit York College on Tuesday at 8 pm in quarterfinal action. BOXSCORE 02/14/07 UMW Men's Basketball Falls to St. Mary's, 76-64 FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped a 76-64 decision to St. Mary's College on Wednesday night at Goolrick Gymnasium to fall to 15-8 on the year, and 9-6 in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Eagles fell behind early, and despite just two fouls being called on the Seahawks in the opening 20 minutes, trailed by just two at halftime after falling behind by as many as 12 points in the first half. A Mike Lee three pointer with 17:32 remaining cut the deficit to two at 42-40, but UMW would get no closer. Lee led UMW with 17 points, seven rebounds, and four assists, while Justin Baker added 15 points and nine rebounds. Jon Pierce also reached double figures with 11 points despite playing in foul trouble throughout much of the night. St. Mary's was led by Tyson Lesesne's 15 points and Valdez Preston's 13 points. The Eagles will close the regular season on Saturday when they visit Catholic University at 4 pm. BOXSCORE 02/10/07 UMW Men's Basketball Tops Goucher, 100-59; Stays One Game Out in CAC Standings
The Eagles used balanced scoring, as six players reached double figures, led by Justin Baker's triple double with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists. Kiernan Whitworth, Mike Lee, and A.J. Fitzgerald each scored 14 points for the Eagles, and Matt Hale scored 12 and Billy Mitchell scored a career-high 11 for UMW. Goucher was led by Pierre Jones' 26 points and seven rebounds. Mary Washington connected on 15-29 three point attempts in the first half, and connected on 7-11 tries in the second half, making their total for the night 22-40 (55.0%). UMW shot 55.7% from the floor in all. The Eagles will host St. Mary's College on Wednesday night at 8 pm in a key conference showdown at Goolrick Gymnasium. BOXSCORE 02/08/07 UMW Men's Basketball Tops Gallaudet in CAC Play, 73-62 WASHINGTON, DC - The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team shot 59.6% from the floor, and junior Jon Pierce scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Eagles to a 73-62 win over Gallaudet University on Thursday in Washington, DC. The Eagles improve to 14-7 overall and 8-5 in CAC play, and remain one game back in the loss column in the league standings. The Eagles led, 39-33, at halftime, but Gallaudet started the half with a 10-2 run to take a 43-41 lead in the opening three minutes of the second half. Matt Hale's three pointer regained the lead for UMW, and although the Bison would tie the score three times, and led 55-52 with 7:10 remaining, but the Eagles would respond with a final run to take the eleven point win. Pierce hit a three with 6:46 left to give UMW the lead for good, and Lee scored five points and Baker six in the capping run. Lee scored 11 points and added 10 rebounds and six assists. Baker added 15 points, going 7-7 from the floor, and adding six rebounds for UMW. The Eagles will host Goucher College at 2 pm on Saturday in another key CAC game. The men's alumni will play at noon preceding the game. BOXSCORE 02/08/07 UMW's Baker, Bruen Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District Teams FREDERICKSBURG, VA - University of Mary Washington seniors Justin Baker and Debbie Bruen have been named to the Academic All-District basketball teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America in the district. Baker was named to the men's first team, and will be eligible for Academic All-America honors, while Bruen was named to the third team. Baker, who carries a 3.49 overall GPA as a business major, leads UMW in scoring again this season, and recently scored his 1,000th career point. After transferring from the College of William & Mary, Baker has been equally impressive on the floor and in the classroom, leading UMW to a 13-7 record this season. Bruen, who earned All-America honors on the floor last season, adds academic all-district honors this year. A psychology major, Bruen carries a 3.29 overall GPA. The reigning CAC Player of the Week, Bruen leads UMW in scoring for the fourth consecutive season. The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) selects Academic All-America teams in 12 programs. A first team, second team and third team are selected in both the University (Division I and I-AA) and College (Division II, III and NAIA) Divisions. 02/06/07 UMW Men's Basketball Edges Salisbury, 57-56; Baker, Lee Reach Milestones
Prior to the end of game heroics by Pierce, UMW saw two milestones eclipsed in the game, as senior guard Mike Lee became just the third player in school history to surpass 1,500 career points, and senior guard Justin Baker became the 14th player in school history to surpass 1,000 career points. UMW trailed throughout the first half, and took its first lead of the game at 35-34 with 13:30 remaining with a layup by Kevin Kitching. After a Kitching steal, Pierce buried a three pointer to give the Eagles a 38-34 lead with 13:07 left. Salisbury regained the lead with 9:14 left on a Ray Williams three pointer, and the Sea Gulls would hold all the way to the final four seconds. With 1:03 remaining and the Eagles trailing, 56-53, Justin Baker stole the ball and scored a layup to cut the deficit to one. A turnover by the Sea Gulls with 48 seconds remaining gave UMW the chance to regain the lead, and Pierce's two free throws were the deciding points. The Sea Gulls entered play at the UMW free throw line, and Segun Odumeu found Ray Williams for a look at a possible winning shot, but Pierce blocked the shot away as the buzzer sounded. The Eagles will visit Gallaudet University on Thursday night at 8 pm in another CAC game. BOXSCORE 02/03/07 UMW Men's Basketball Falls to York, 90-75
The Eagles shot the lights out in the first half, making 9-17 three point attempts in the opening 20 minutes, and yet carried just a 42-38 lead at intermission. UMW came out cold in the second half, shooting just 33.3% in the second half, and made just 8-18 free throws in the game. The Eagles were led by Justin Baker and Kiernan Whitworth, who each scored 17 points. Baker added eight rebounds and six assists. A.J. Fitzgerald scored 12 points and Mike Lee added 11 for UMW. Brad Zerfing led York with 20 points, making 7-8 shots in the game, including 6-6 on three pointers. UMW will host Salisbury University on Tuesday night at 8 pm in another CAC contest. BOXSCORE 01/27/07 UMW Men's Basketball Falls at Hood in CAC Contest, 91-90, in Overtime FREDERICK, MD - The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped a 91-90 overtime decision at Hood College on Saturday to fall to 12-6 overall and 6-4 in Capital Athletic Conference play. UMW saw five players in double figures, led by Mike Lee's 19 points and 10 rebounds and Jon Pierce's 19 points. Kiernan Whitworth had 17 points for the Eagles, while Matt Hale added 14 points, and Justin Baker just missed out on a triple-double, with 11 points, 14 rebounds, and eight assists. Jesse Gutenkust led Hood with 31 points and 17 rebounds. Mary Washington led, 90-89, in the waning seconds of overtime, but Gutenkust made two free throws to give Hood the lead for good. The Eagles are idle until February 3 when they host York College at 2 pm. BOXSCORE 01/25/07 UMW Men's Basketball Falls at Home to Marymount, 77-73 FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped its first home game of the season with a 77-73 loss to Marymount University on Thursday at Goolrick Gymnasium in Capital Athletic Conference action. UMW falls to 12-5 overall and 6-3 in CAC play. The Eagles led throughout much of the first half, holding as much as a 10 point lead at 36-26 with 4:04 to play in the half. But the Saints closed the half with a 14-3 run to take a 40-39 lead at halftime. The second half was much the same, as the Eagles raced out to a double-digit lead, only to see Marymount make a run to erase the deficit and take the lead by the final horn. A.J. Fitzgerald hit four three pointers in a five minute span to propel UMW to a 62-50 lead with 11:45 remaining. Marymount erased the lead by the 4:13 mark on a layup by Brandon Parker. Free throws from Kiernan Whitworth and Justin Baker upped UMW's lead to 70-67, but the Saints closed the game with a 10-3 run, capped by three Bryant Majors free throws. The Eagles will visit first-place Hood College on Saturday at 4 pm in another CAC contest. BOXSCORE 01/23/07 UMW Men's Basketball Tops Catholic, 64-56
UMW took the early lead, with both teams struggling to score, scoring the first bucket more than two minutes into the game, and leading, 11-5, on an Eric Pearson layup with 13:40 remaining in the first half. The Cardinals stormed back to take a game-high eight point lead with 3:50 remaining on a Scott Fumai dunk. But the Eagles scored the final two buckets of the half, from Billy Mitchell and Justin Baker, to cut the halftime deficit to 26-22. After shooting just 30% from the floor in the first half, including 1-14 on three pointers, the Eagles got their stroke in the second half, connecting for 5-10 long range shots, including a pair from senior guard Mike Lee in the second half, and three from backcourt mate A.J. Fitzgerald. Catholic led, 34-28, with 15:59 remaining, but Jon Pierce scored a pair of baskets to cut the lead to two, and a Fitzagerlad three gave UMW the lead at 35-34 with 12:22 left. CUA tied the score at 35 with a Stephen Wheeler free throw, but would not regain the lead. Senior guard Justin Baker led UMW with 16 points, six assists, and five rebounds, while Mike Lee had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Fitzgerald scored 14 points and had four steals, and Pierce added ten for the Eagles. Nick Olivero had 13 points to lead Catholic, Mike Wasilenko had 12, and Wheeler and Scott Fumai had ten each for the Cardinals. UMW will host Marymount University on Thursday at 8 pm in another CAC contest. BOXSCORE 01/20/07 UMW Men's Basketball Falls at St. Mary's, 78-75 ST. MARY'S CITY, MD - The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped a 78-75 decision at St. Mary's College on Saturday to fall to 11-4 on the year, and 5-2 in Capital Athletic Conference play. UMW led by as many as 15 in the first half, but the Seahawks erased the deficit in short order in the second half with a 17-6 run after trailing 44-33 at halftime. St. Mary's took the lead for good with a pair of Mike Smelkinson free throws with 2:25 to play. UMW was led by Matt Hale's 19 points, with Justin Baker (15 points, 15 rebounds), Jon Pierce (13) and A.J. Fitzgerald (11) also reaching double figures. St. Mary's was led by Tyson Lesesne's 23 points. The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday when they host Catholic University at 8 pm. BOXSCORE 01/17/07 UMW Men's Basketball Tops Goucher, 87-59 TOWSON, MD - Senior guard A.J. Fitzgerald scored a team-high 18 points with six three pointers, leading six University of Mary Washington players in double figures in an 87-59 win at Goucher College on Wednesday night in Capital Athletic Conference action. Junior forward Jon Pierce scored 16 points, and Justin Baker scored 11 points and added 11 rebounds for UMW. Also in double figures for the Eagles were Ben Stokes with 13, Matt Hale with 12, and Kiernan Whitworth with 11. Pierce added seven rebounds and five assists, and Baker added four assists and four steals. UMW had 24 assists on their 29 field goals in the game. UMW trailed throughout much of the first half but battled back to take a one point lead with a little over one minute remaining. A foul on the Gophers, coupled with a technical foul on the Gopher coach, gave UMW four free throws, and the Eagles made all four to take a five point lead to halftime. After both teams struggled throughout the first 10 minutes, UMW suddenly caught fire, scoring 33 points in the final 11 minutes to push a seven point lead to a 28-point win. The Eagles (11-3, 5-1 CAC), tied atop the CAC standings with Hood College, will visit St. Mary's College on Saturday at 2 p.m. in another CAC contest. Gallaudet was the team that came out strong, connecting on their first three three point attempts in leading, 17-9, with 12:30 to play in the first half. From that point forward, the Eagles outscored the Bison, 31-13, to close the half with a 43-30 lead. The second half was much of the same, with UMW connecting for 10-19 threes in the second stanza. Sophomore Matt Hale and senior Justin Baker led UMW with 16 points apiece, while freshman guard Ben Stokes scored 15, senior Mike Lee added 12, and sophomore Kiernan Whitworth scored 11. A.J. Fitzgerald, Baker, and Lee led UMW on the glass with six rebounds each, and Baker had a team-high seven assists. The Eagles break the school mark of 18 three pointers in a game, set this season at home against Hood College and equalled at Frostburg State university last Thursday. The Eagles will visit Goucher College on Wednesday in another CAC contest starting at 7:30 p.m. BOXSCORE 01/10/07 UMW Men's Basketball Falls at Salisbury for First CAC Loss SALISBURY, MD - The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team fell to 9-3 on the season with a 73-68 loss at Salisbury University on Wednesday night in Salisbury. UMW falls to 3-1 in Capital Athletic Conference play, while Salisbury improves to 4-0. UMW trailed, 71-68, with 20 seconds remaining, and got an open look at a tying three pointer, but fouled on the rebound after the ball rimmed out. SU made a pair of free throws for the final margin. Mike Lee and Justin Baker each had 13 points to lead UMW. Lee also had five rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Baker added 10 rebounds for a double-double, and had five assists. Kiernan Whitworth and Jon Pierce each had 10 points, despite combining for nine fouls in 34 minutes combined. The source of that problem lied with Salisbury's Ozi Menakaya, who had 21 rebounds, including 12 offensive. A.J. Fitzgerald and Matt Hale each had nine points for UMW. UMW shot just 32.9% from the floor, and 56% from the free throw line. The Eagles will host Gallaudet University on Saturday at 4 p.m. in another CAC contest. BOXSCORE 01/04/07 UMW Men's Basketball Ties School Mark with 18 Three Pointers; Tops Frostburg, 100-66 FROSTBURG, MD - The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team tied the school record it set last month with 18 three point baskets en route to a 100-66 win at Frostburg State University on Thursday in Frostburg. The Eagles' 100 points is the first time they've scored triple figures in exactly one year, as they topped North Carolina Wesleyan College, 107-99, last January 4. Senior guard Justin Baker scored 20 points and added seven assists to lead the Eagles, who also had a standout performance from senior guard Mike Lee, who scored 14 points and added nine rebounds, eight assists, and four steals. Also in double figures for the Eagles were Matt Hale with 15, Kiernan Whitworth with 13, Ben Stokes with 12, and Jon Pierce with 10. Whitworth added nine rebounds, six offensively. The Eagles led, 45-29, at halftime, and scored 55 in the second half. UMW, now 9-2 on the season, will visit Salisbury University next Wednesday night at 8 p.m. BOXSCORE 12/29/06 UMW Men's Basketball Rebounds with 68-61 Win Over Allegheny at Land of Magic Classic DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The University of Mary Washington's men's basketball team rebounded from Thursday night's defeat by topping Allegheny College, 68-61, at the Land of Magic Classic in Daytona Beach, Fla. on Friday afternoon. Senior Justin Baker scored 16 points and added 12 rebounds in leading the Eagles, who improve to 8-2 on the year. The Eagles trailed in the first half, but a halfcourt bank shot at the buzzer by sophomore Matt Hale, who added 14 points, gave UMW a five-point halftime advantage. Junior forward Jon Pierce scored 13 points and sophomore forward Kiernan Whitworth added 11. Mike Lee had eight rebounds and eight assists. UMW will return to action on January 4, when the men and women travel to Frostburg State University. The women play at 5:30 pm, with the men following at 7:30. BOXSCORE 12/28/06 Shooting Woes Stymie UMW Men's Basketball at Embry-Riddle, 67-36 DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The University of Mary Washington's men's basketball team had major trouble in shaking off the rust from a ten-day layoff, as the Eagles shot just 13-63 from the floor in a 67-36 loss to Embry-Riddle University, the sixth-ranked team in NAIA Division II, on Thursday in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Eagles, who lead the Capital Athletic Conference in three-point shooting and baskets made, went just 4-35 from distance in the game. The Eagles had just nine turnovers in the game, had 13 offensive rebounds, but their woeful shooting spelled a decisive defeat against ERAU. Senior guard Justin Baker led UMW with nine points, and senior guard Mike Lee grabbed ten rebounds for the Eagles. UMW will face Allegheny College on Friday at 4 pm in Daytona at Seabreeze High School, due to the tornado damage at Embry-Riddle's campus. No live stats will be available due to the venue change. BOXSCORE 12/18/06 UMW Men's Basketball Tops McDaniel, 76-64, to Improve to 7-1 WESTMINSTER, MD - Senior guard Justin Baker scored 22 points and added nine rebounds to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 76-64 win at McDaniel College on Monday night. The Eagles improve to 7-1 on the season, and 6-1 in road games. The Eagles trailed, 30-27, at halftime after shooting poorly in the first frame. But Baker led a charge by the Eagles, who scored a three pointer in the opening minutes of the second half, giving UMW the lead for good. The Eagles stretched the lead to as many as 15 points before a last second three pointer by McDaniel cut the final deficit to 12. Joining Baker in double figures were Jon Pierce, who had a double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and A.J. Fitzgerald, who added 11. Mike Lee and Matt Hale had nine points each, and Kiernan Whitworth had eight points. The Eagles will be back in action on December 28, when they visit the sixth ranked team in NAIA, Embry Riddle University, in Daytona Beach, Fla at 7:30 pm. BOXSCORE 12/16/06 UMW Men's Basketball Falls for First Time; Drops 78-72 decision at Shenandoah WINCHESTER, VA - The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team fell to 6-1 on the season with a 78-72 loss at Shenandoah University on Saturday in Winchester, VA. The Eagles were led by senior Mike Lee, who scored 16 second half points after going scoreless in the first half, to pace four Eagles in double figures. UMW dug itself into an early hole, trailing by seven, 37-30, at halftime, and falling behind by as many as 12 in the second half. But the Eagles went on a 15-2 run to take the lead at 58-57 on a pair of A.J. Fitzgerald free throws with 6:50 remaining. But Shenandoah returned the lead to 12, and held on for the six point win. Mouktar Fawenhimni scored 25 points to lead all scorers, and Onye Onunaku made 11-12 free throws en route to 18 points for the Hornets. Jeremiah Lawrence made eight of nine field goals en route to 18 points as well. Lee scored 16 and grabbed eight rebounds to lead UMW, and Fitzgerald added 15 points. Justin Baker scored 14 points and Matt Hale 12 for the Eagles, playing after a seven day layoff. UMW fell behind, 8-3, seven minutes into play, but an 8-2 run gave the Eagles their first lead of the game at 14-10 with 9:28 remaining. The lead traded hands five times with the Spartans holding a five point lead at intermission, 26-21. UMW opened the second half with a 10-3 run, led by baskets by Kiernan Whitworth, Mike Lee, Justin Baker, and Hale, whose three pointer gave UMW the lead at 34-32 with 14:31 remaining. York scored eight straight points to take a five point lead at 40-35 with 11 minutes left, but UMW responded with an 11-0 run to take the lead at 50-44 thanks to three straight three pointers, two by Mike Lee and one by Hale. After York cut the deficit to two, 50-48, Justtin Baker hit another three to push the Eagle lead to 53-48. York cut the lead to one, 53-52, but Hale hit two huge free throws before the raucous York fans to push the lead back to three at 55-52. York had a final attempt at a three,but the shot was missed and York's offensive rebound didn't result in another shot. UMW opened an early lead, carrying an 18-4 lead through the first five minutes of play. A three-point basket by Matt Hale gave UMW a 19-point lead, at 32-13, with 6:51 remaining in the half, but Hood battled back with a 17-3 run to close the half down just 35-30. The Eagles came out firing on all cylinders in the second half, scoring the first nine points of the half thanks in part to a pair of three pointers by senior guard A.J. Fitzgerald (shown). Hood would come no cvloser than ten the rest of the way, with UMW leading by as many as 23, 73-50, with 4:06 remaining. The Eagles again showed great balance, with sophomore forward Kiernan Whitworth and junior forward Jon Pierce tying for the team lead with 16 apiece. Fitzgerald scored 12 and added five assists, Matt Hale scored 11, and Justin Baker and Mike Lee combined for 16 points, 15 rebounds, and seven assists. Hood was led by Ryan Junghans' 16 points. The Eagles' 18 three point baskets breaks the school mark, surpassing last year's total of 17 in a win over Marymount, and their 44 three point attempts eclipses the school mark as well. In addition, Baker had five rebounds and four assists. Senior guards Mike Lee and A.J. Fitzgerald and sophomore guard Matt Hale (shown) each scored 12 points, and sophomore forward Kiernan Whitworth added 10 points for UMW. The Eagles opened up a 39-27 halftime lead, trailing only moments into the game and then leading throughout. UMW shot 52% from the floor (27-52), and made 11-24 three point baskets. The Eagles outrebounded the Saints, 32-30. UMW will return to action on Saturday when they host Hood College in another CAC tilt at 2 pm in the home opener. The Eagles jumped out to a fast start, leading 46-32 at halftime, but NC Wesleyan stormed back to take the lead with eleven minutes remaining. Despite the loss of sophomore forward Kiernan Whitworth, who fouled out with 11 minutes remaining, the Eagles regained the lead and held on for the six point win. Pierce had six rebounds, four assists, and two steals in addition to his 20 points, and sophomore guard Matt Hale added 17 points and four assists off the bench. Senior guard Mike Lee scored 14, Justin Baker added 13 points and eight rebounds, and senior guard A.J. Fitzgerald scored 10 points and had eight rebounds and four assists. The Eagles shot 46.2% from the floor, including 42.6% on three point baskets (18-39). The Eagles trailed throughout the game, but used oustanding perimeter shooting by Fitzgerald down the stretch to climb back into the game. Tournament Most Valuable Player Justin Baker had a team-high 17 points, Fitzgerald added 14, and senior guard Mike Lee added ten points for UMW. Sophomore forward Kiernan Whitworth and junior all-tournament selection Jon Pierce each had seven for the Eagles. UMW shot 45.3% from the floor, including 10-26 on three-point attempts. Dickinson was able to fend off the Eagles for much of the game by shooting 14-14 from the free throw line. Kizmahr Grell led Dickinson with 23 points. Mary Washington will visit North Carolina Wesleyan College on Tuesday evening at 5 pm. BOXSCORE 11/17/06 UMW Men's Basketball Tops Messiah in Season Opener, 83-76
The Eagles opened up an early 11-2 lead, thanks to ten straight points from Pierce. UMW kept the lead throughout the first half, and led 32-29 at halftime. Messiah opened the second half with a three-pointer to knot the score, and led by as many as four, and led, 55-52, with 11:05 on a three pointer by Jonathan Byrd. But Lee hit three straight three pointers and Whitworth added a three-point play, giving UMW a 12-0 run and a 64-55 lead. A three pointer by Fitzgerald ran the lead to eleven with 2:54 left, and the teams traded baskets in the final minutes, with the Eagles ending with a seven-point win. The Eagles will face either Dickinson College or Pitt-Greensburg on Saturday in the tournament title game at 3:30 pm.
