04/17/07 UMW Men's Lacrosse Falls at Villa Julie in CAC Quarterfinals, 16-6 STEVENSON, MD - Villa Julie College scored the first six goals of the game, and led, 8-1, in a 16-6 win over the University of Mary Washington in Capital Athletic Conference quarterfinal action on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles close the season with a 6-9 overall record. After the Mustangs, ranked 14th in the nation, netted six straight goals to open the game, UMW's Sean Brown broke the drought with an unassisted goal with 2:31 left in the quarter. Trailing 8-1, the Eagles scored two straight to open the second quarter, by Scott Fletcher and Brown. Fletcher and Dan Coats scored in the third quarter, and Fletcher capped the scoring in the fourth to cut the final defocot to 10. Eric Everitt allowed 11 goals in 26 minutes and Chris Simonin added seven saves in 34 minutes for the Eagles, who close the year with a 6-9 mark. BOXSCORE 04/14/07 UMW Men's Lacrosse Tops York, 9-4, in Regular Season Finale YORK, PA - The York College men's lacrosse team had their season-high three-game win streak come to a grinding halt as the University of Mary Washington Eagles handed the Spartans a 9-4 loss in Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon in York. The Eagles improve to 6-8 overall and 3-5 in the CAC. The Spartans finish their 2007 regular season with a mark of 5-7 overall and 4-4 in the league. The Eagles' Marc D'Eredita started the scoring with a pair of first period goals. His first tally came at 14:24 off a pass from Scott Fletcher while his second goal came off a pass from Pete Collins at the 8:43 mark. The Spartans got on the board with a man advantage goal from Ryan Schab with 5:12 remaining in the first. The Eagles then struck for two goals inside the final 53 seconds of the period to take the 4-1 lead 15 minutes of play. York's Paul Rudell opened the second period scoring with a tally off a pass from senior Adam Cross just 1:31 into the stanza. Mary Washington struck for the final two goals of the period, taking a 6-2 lead to the break. The third period was lacking in scoring as Fletcher's man-advantage goal with 2:29 remaining in the period was the only goal of the stanza. Mary Washington increased their lead to 9-2 with 6:56 remaining in the fourth on a Keith Sweeney goal. York got a pair of goals late in the game to close out the scoring. Collins led the Eagles in scoring with three points on two goals and an assist. D'Eredita had a pair of goals while Fletcher had a goal and an assist for a pair of points. Sean Brown was the other Eagle with multiple points with two assists. Matt Richman-Raphael added a goal, eight ground balls and won 13-of-16 face offs for the game. Cross, Rudell, and Schab each had a goal and an assist for two points. Kyle Henninger had the Spartans' other goal while Brendan Hopkins had an assist. Henninger tallied a team-high five ground balls in the game. Eagle goalie Eric Everitt notched nine saves in the win. He allowed just four goals for the game. Spartan goalie Matt Keeler registered 10 saves in his 58:58 of work. He allowed all nine of the Eagle goals. The Eagles held a 32-25 edge in total shots while they also had a significant 47-33 edge in ground balls. The Eagles dominated the face offs as they captured 13-of-16 face-offs for the game. Mary Washington converted 2-of-5 extra man chances while the Spartans were 1-for-6. York committed 30 turnovers while the Eagles had 32 miscues. The Eagles will visit Villa Julie College on Tuesday in the CAC Tournament quarterfinals at 4 pm. BOXSCORE 04/11/07 UMW Men's Lacrosse Falls to Marymount, 7-6 FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Marymount University jumped out to a 4-0 lead and held on for a 7-6 win at the Battleground in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles trailed 6-2 entering the fourth quarter, and cut the deficit to 6-5 with three goals in the span of one minute in the fourth quarter. But the Saints added an all-important insurance goal, which ended up being the game winner. UMW scored in the final minute, but were unable to capture the tying goal. D.J. Tayman scored four goals for the Saints to lead both teams. Kevin Conklin added two goals for the Saints. UMW was led by Sean Brown and Marc D'Eredita, who each scored twice. Alex Hammer had seven saves for MU, and Eric Everitt had four saves for UMW. The Eagles will visit York College on Saturday at 1 pm. UMW jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, with goals by Brown, Pete Collins, and Brent Fisk. The Presidents scored with 4:08 left in the quarter on a goal by Sean Jasionowski. The Eagles erupted for five second quarter goals, with Brown and Coats scoring two apiece, and Collins adding another, to lead 8-1 at halftime. The third quarter saw the Eagles add three more goals, by Coats, Marc D'Eredita, and long stick middie Peter Lytle. Freshman David Pierandri capped the scoring on an assist from Broughan Fanning in the fourth. Junior Eric Everitt picked up the win in goal for the Eagles, making making two saves and allowing one goal in 51 minutes of play. Freshman Chris Simonin made two stops in nine minutes for UMW. Andrew Reid had nine saves for W&J in three quarters, and Brad Lowery added three saves in the fourth quarter. The Eagles outshot the Presidents, 43-13, and had 34 ground balls to 21 for W&J. Matt Richman-Raphael added nine faceoff wins for the Eagles, who will host Marymount University on Wednesday at 4 pm in a CAC contest. BOXSCORE 04/04/07 UMW Men's Lacrosse Falls at Top-Ranked Salisbury, 17-3 SALISBURY, Md. - Junior attackman Greg Titus scored nine points against the University of Mary Washington as the top-ranked Salisbury University Sea Gulls won 17-3 at a wet and soggy Sea Gull Stadium. Titus (seven goals, two assists) scored four of the first five goals for the Sea Gulls (12-0, 6-0 CAC), who extended their record streak to 59 straight regular-season games and 53 consecutive at home. Senior Eric Bishop was the other multi-goal scorer for the Gulls as he netted three. Salisbury assisted on 13 of its 17 goals on the day. Salisbury led 5-0 midway through the second quarter before Mary Washington (4-7, 2-4 CAC) got on the board with a Scott Fletcher goal, his first of three on the day. The combination of Bishop, Hickman and Titus closed out the quarter and sent SU into the half up 8-1. In the third quarter the Sea Gulls picked up where they left off and scored the first five goals of the second half. UMW’s Fletcher found the back of the net at the 4:42 mark and again with 11:26 left in the game. Senior goalie Max Zarchin (12-0) recorded six saves in the win as he played for the first three quarters. UMW goalie Eric Everitt made 11 saves for the Eagles in between the pipes. SU outshot UMW 37-17 and scooped up 46 groundballs. The Eagles won 13-of-24 faceoffs (9-of-11 in the first half) and both teams killed three penalties each. BOXSCORE 03/31/07 UMW Men's Lacrosse Tops Christopher Newport, 13-4 NEWPORT NEWS, VA - The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team defeated Christopher Newport University, 13-4, on Saturday for its second straight win. The Eagles improve to 4-6 overall. UMW held the Captains scoreless until the fourth quarter, netting three goals in the first quarter, five in the second, and two in the third. Brent Fisk and Scott Fletcher each had two goals for the Eagles, and Keith Sweeney, Sean Brown, and Matt Morrell each had a goal and an assist for UMW in a balanced effort that saw 11 different players score. Junior Eric Everitt made five saves and allowed no goals in 49 minutes for the Eagles with Chris Simonin making two saves in the fourth quarter. The Eagles outshot the Captains, 46-19, and had 42 ground balls to 28 for CNU. Junior Matt Richman-Raphael won 13 of his 16 faceoffs to propel the Eagle offense. UMW will visit top-ranked Salisbury University on Wednesday at 4 pm in Capital Athletic Conference action. BOXSCORE 03/28/07 UMW Men's Lacrosse Tops St. Mary's, 8-5, in CAC Action FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team erupted for four third quarter goals to break a halftime tie to defeat St. Mary's College, 8-5, on Wednesday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in CAC action, while St. Mary's falls to 6-3 and 2-2. St. Mary's scored the game's first two goals, leading 1-0 after one quarter. UMW's Keith Sweeney got the Eagles on the board with 11:16 left in the second quarter, and Brent Fisk knotted the score with 1:42 remaining before halftime. The Eagles opened the third quarter by scoring three times in the first 4:06 of the period. Scott Fletcher scored the first of his two goals just 17 seconds in the quarter, and Fisk followed with his second tally at 12:13 left. Pete Collins scored at 10:54 to give UMW a 5-2 lead. After St. Mary's scored on a goal by Ryan Alexander, Fletcher scored again before the quarter clsed with SMC's Alexander netting a man up goal. Sean Brown and Brian Meaney scored fourth quarter goals as insurance in the three goal win. UMW's defense was cited for its stellar play. Junior Eric Everitt made nine saves in nets for UMW, while Rich Barr had eight saves in the loss for St. Mary's. The Eagles held a 28-27 advantage in shots, but controlled 13 of 17 faceoffs in the game. The Eagles will visit Christopher Newport University on Saturday at 1 pm. BOXSCORE 03/24/07 UMW Men's Lacrosse Drops OT Heartbreaker at Goucher, 7-6 TOWSON, MD - An unassisted goal by David Jadin 3:56 into overtime today provided Goucher with its first Capital Athletic Conference win of the season, a 7-6 triumph over Mary Washington. The freshman long-stick midfielder's first collegiate goal allowed the Gophers (2-4, 1-2 CAC) to snap a seven-game losing streak in games deadlocked at the end of regulation. The last time Goucher prevailed in overtime was an 8-7 victory over Randolph-Macon on March 15, 2003. Overtime didn't seem very likely today with the Gophers leading 6-4 with less than a minute remaining in regulation, but goals by Scott Fletcher with :32 left to play and Tommy Park with :15 showing on the clock allowed the Eagles (2-6, 1-3 CAC) to catch up. In overtime, sophomore goalkeeper Austin Main of the Gophers made two saves, raising his total for the game to 14. His counterpart, Eric Everitt, finished with 10 saves, including one in OT. Despite being out-shot, 16-8, the Gophers managed to reach halftime tied with Mary Washington at 2-2. They took their first lead of the contest 1:10 into the third quarter on an unassisted extra-man goal by Sam Fitzpatrick and, by the end of the period, they were ahead 5-3. Even though they extended their winning streak against the Eagles to four games, the Gophers still trail the all-time series with Mary Washington, 12-6. The Eagles will visit Goucher College on Saturday at 2 pm in another CAC contest. BOXSCORE 03/20/07 UMW Men's Lacrosse Falls at Catholic, 7-6 WASHINGTON, DC - The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaking 7-6 decision at Catholic University on Tuesday. The Eagles fall to 2-5 overall, and 1-2 in Capital Athletic Conference play. Catholic jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but UMW managed to tie the score at four by halftime. Brian Meaney and Tommy Park scored first quarter goals for UMW, and Pete Collins and Matt Morrell added goals in period two. The Cards led, 5-4, after three quarters. Dan Coats and Matt Morrell added fourth quarter goals to cut the deficit to one, but UMW was unable to find the tying tally. The Eagles outshot CUA, 48-21, and had 42 ground balls to 32 for CUA. Eric Everitt had three saves for UMW. The Eagles will visit Goucher College on Saturday at 2 pm in another CAC contest. BOXSCORE 03/17/07 UMW Men's Lacrosse Falls at Villa Julie, 12-4 STEVENSON, MD - The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team fell to Villa Julie College, 12-4, on Saturday in Stevenson, MD. The Eagles fall to 2-4 on the year. Matt Weiss, Broughan Fanning, Emory Clark, and David Pierandri all scored goals for the Eagles, but UMW was outshot 36-15, and couldn't find enough offense to challenge the Mustangs. Eric Everitt had ten saves and Chris Simonin had two saves for UMW, who will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit Catholic University in another CAC game starting at 3:30 pm. 03/10/07 UMW Men's Lacrosse Falls to McDaniel, 12-5 FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The university of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team fell into an early hole and could not recover in a 12-5 loss to McDaniel College on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles fall to 2-3 on the season, and the Green Terror improve to 3-0. For the Eagles, sophomore Sean Brown scored two goals and added two assists, while Pete Collins, Ryan Motyka, and Matt Morrell each scored one goal. McDaniel was led by Matthew Buschman, Steve Hoffman, and Chris Edmonds, who each had three goals. Bill Warner had two goals and two assists, and Gibbs Preston had a pair of assists for McDaniel. Junior Eric Everitt had eight saves for UMW, while McDaniel had 12 saves for the game. The Eagles will host York College of PA on Wednesday at 3:30 pm. 03/03/07 UMW Men's Lacrosse Tops Randolph-Macon, 7-3, for Second Straight Win ASHLAND, VA - Senior attack Pete Collins scored a pair of goals, and freshman Brian Meaney added a goal and two assists to lead the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team to a 7-3 win over Randolph-Macon College on Saturday in a defensive battle in Ashland, Va. The Eagles, winners of two straight, improve to 2-2 on the year. After a scoreless first quarter, UMW opened a 2-1 halftime lead, and scored five unanswered goals in the third quarter to lead, 7-1, entering the fourth quarter. Marc D'Eredita, Matt Weiss, Brent Fisk, and Matt Morrell each tallied single goals for UMW, with Keith Sweeney and Matt Richman-Raphael adding one assist each. Richman-Raphael also won 10 of 14 faceoffs for the Eagles. The Eagles outshot the Yellow Jackets, 23-19, and collected 39 ground balls. Junior goalie Eric Everitt made 10 saves for UMW. The Eagles will host McDaniel College next saturday at 1 pm. BOXSCORE 02/28/07 UMW Men's Lacrosse Tops Hood, 14-2, in CAC Tilt
Freshman Dan Coats opened the scoring for the Eagles with 9:34 remaining in the first period, and sophomore Brent Fisk added an unassisted goal with 4:04 left. Freshman Brian Meaney added a goal from Sean Brown to give UMW a 3-0 lead after one quarter. Senior Pete Collins scored a pair of goals, with Fisk, Matt Morrell, Marc D'Eredita, and Keith Sweeney adding single tallies to push the lead to 9-0 in the third quarter. Freshman David Pierandri scored a goal sandwiched between two Hood goals, and Morrell added his second goal to give UMW an 11-2 lead after three quarters. Pierandri, Dan Bamford, and Ryan Motyka scored in the fourth for the Eagles to push the final to 14-2. The Eagles outshot Hood, 36-14. Junior Eric Everitt had five saves in 45 minutes for the Eagles, with Chris Simonin adding one save in the fourth quarter. Sam Hofmann had 11 saves for Hood. The Eagles will host Randolph-Macon College on Saturday at 1 pm. BOXSCORE 02/24/07 UMW Men's Lacrosse Falls, 13-6, at Hampden-Sydney College FARMVILLE, VA - The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dropepd a 13-6 decision at hampden-Sydney College on Saturday to fall to 0-2 on the season. Freshman Dan Coates had two goals and sophomore Sean Brown had two goals and one assist for the Eagles. Pete Collins and Scott Fletcher each scored goals for UMW, and Brian Meaney and Brent Fisk also had assists. Junior Eric Everitt had nine saves for UMW. The Tigers outshot the Eagles, 34-24, and were 3-3 on extra man opportunities. UMW scored four man-up goals in eight opportunities. UMW will host Hood College on Wednesday in the home opener at 3:30 pm. BOXSCORE 02/17/07 UMW Men's Lacrosse Opens With 18-13 Loss at #7 Roanoke College SALEM, VA - The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team opened the 2007 season at seventh-ranked Roanoke College, and fell, 18-13, to the Maroons in an offensive contest. The Eagles jumped on the board first, with Keith Sweeney scoring with 12:19 remaining in the first quarter. After Roanoke tied the score, freshman Daniel Coats gave UMW a 2-1 lead midway through the first period. The Maroons then ran off four straight goals, but the Eagles answered with two goals in the final 44 seconds of the quarter to trail, 5-4, after 15 minutes. Roanoke scored six of the first eight goals in the second quarter, but the Eagles scored two in the closing minutes again to clip the deficit to 11-8 at halftime. Sean Brown and Matt Morrell scored two of the first three goals of the second half, cutting the deficit to 12-10, but would get no closer, as Roanoke scored two more goals in the third quarter and four in the fourth. Morrell led UMW with four goals and two assists, while Scott Fletcher scored twice and added one assist. The Eagles commited just two penalties in the game, but went just 1-7 on extra man opportunities.
