Park led UMW with 11 goals and 10 assists this season, while Gray led a stingy UMW defense to 14 wins. Taibl started every game his freshman season, and added three goals and three assists. 11/28/06 Gray, Park Named to D3Kicks.com All-Region First Team ![]() FREDERICKSBURG, VA - University of Mary Washington men's soccer seniors Glenn Gray and Tommy Park were named to the D3Kicks.com's all-South Region first team, as was released Monday. Gray, a defender from Culpeper, VA, led a young UMW defensive unit to a 14-5 record, national ranking, and advancement to the Capital Athletic Conference championship game. Park led the Eagles in scoring with 11 goals and 10 assists, and had two game winning goals. The D3Kicks.com all-region teams were selcted by a panel of coaches and sports information directors, with nominations taken from sports information directors across the nation. FULL TEAM 11/07/06 Six UMW Players Named on All-CAC Men's Soccer Team ST. MARY'S CITY, MD - Coming off its best season in several years, the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team has had six players named to the All-Capital Athletic Conference team, released today by the league office and voted on by the league's coaches. Senior midfielder Tommy Park (Mount Rainier, MD/DeMatha) repeated as a first team selection, and was joined on the first team by classmate Glenn Gray (Culpeper, VA/Culpeper). Freshman forward Ryan Snyder (Annandale, VA/Woodson), junior midfielder Luke Hostetter (Richmond, VA/Maggie Walker), freshman midfielder Ryan Taibl (Centreville, VA/Westfield), and senior goalie Elliott Jones (Fredericksburg, VA/Herndon) were named to the second team. Park finished as the Eagles' leading scorer in 2006, with 11 goals and 10 assists. Gray, a defender, had one assist while serving as the team's defensive captain and leader of a young unit that allowed just 20 goals all season. Snyder was named to the second team after finishing second on the team in scoring, with 11 goals and 5 assists, despite missing four games with injury. Hostetter had three goals and three assists, and Taibl emerged as one of the top players in the conference, with three goals and three assists. Jones allowed just eleven goals all season, with a 1.21 GAA and 26 saves. The Eagles finished the year with a 14-5 overall record, and advanced to the CAC Championship for the first time since 2002. 11/04/06 UMW Men's Soccer Falls at York in CAC Championship YORK, PA - Third-ranked York College erupted for three goals in the final 28 minutes in defeating the University of Mary Washington, 3-0, on Saturday for their second straight Capital Athletic Conference Championship. The Spartans improve to 19-0-2, while the Eagles fall to 14-5. With the score tied at 0-0, York's Chris Ports found the net at 62:29 on an assist from Ryan Eaton. At 75:07, Travis Williams scored on a pass from Kurt Lane, and in the final minute, Andrew Wheeler scored on an assist from Ports. York outshot UMW, 22-6, and had seven corner kicks to five for the Eagles. UMW senior Elliott Jones had seven saves for the Eagles, while Kyle Marks had one stop for York. The Spartans claim the league's automatic birth in next week's NCAA Division III Tournament. The selections will be made on Sunday, with the bracket announced on Monday. Johnson also scored the Eagles' first goal, in the ninth minute, on an assist from Tommy Park. Two SMC defenders collided outside the penalty area, and Park corralled the ball and sent the ball forward to Johnson, who beat the SMC goalkeeper to give UMW the lead. The Seahawks would answer midway through the second half, as Misha Simon scored on a header off a free kick by Sean Eardley. The Eagles outshot the Seahawks, 16-9, and had six corner kicks to two for St. Mary's. UMW goalkeeper Elliott Jones had three saves for UMW, and also snagged several crossed balls near the goal as well. Rick Besore had eight saves for St. Mary's, who finishes the year with a 7-10-2 record. The Eagles will visit third-ranked York College on Saturday at 1:30 pm in the 2006 CAC Championship. UMW freshman Ryan Snyder opened the scoring in the eighth minute on a penalty kick. Senior midfielder Tommy Park scored at 18:55 on an assist from Tommy DiNuzzo, and Snyder scored again unassisted at 31:01. Senior Chris Dolan scored on an assist from Park at 36:00 to give the Eagles a 4-0 halftime advantage. Freshman Ryan Taibl scored at 64:18, but Catholic, playing a man down for the majority of the game due to a red card, scored at 70:42 on a goal by Daniel Clifford from an Owen Thomas corner kick. Dolan scored again at 75:04 on an assist from Matt Lawrey to cap the scoring. The Eagles outshot Catholic, 25-5, and had seven corner kicks to two for the Cards. Elliott Jones didn't record a save in 61 scoreless minutes for the Eagles, and Greg Savage added a save in goal for UMW. Joe Schettino had one save and Bill Frame had five saves for Catholic. UMW will face St. Mary's on Wednesday at 2:45 pm at the Battleground. BOXSCORE 10/27/06 UMW Men's Soccer Tops Gallaudet, 6-0 WASHINGTON, DC – The University of Mary Washington men’s soccer team closed the regular season with a 6-0 victory at Gallaudet University on Friday. The Eagles, who received two goals from Justin Weirich, improves to 12-4 on the season. Mary Washington opened the scoring in the 24th minute, when junior Vincent Kooijman scored on an assist from Tommy Park. Freshman Ryan Taibl scored two minutes later set up by Glenn Gray, giving UMW a 2-0 halftime lead. Chris Dolan increased the lead to 3-0 in the 50th minute, and Tommy Park scored two minutes later on an assist from Teddy Barry. Weirich scored both of his goals on assists from Darrien Ruggles, in the 67th and 75th minutes. The Eagles outshot the Bison, 28-0, and had eight corner kicks to none for Gallaudet. Emmett Rutkowski and Greg Savage combined for the shutout without making a save. Mary Washington, the second seed in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament, will host seventh-seeded Catholic University on Sunday in the CAC Quarterfinals at 1 pm. BOXSCORE 10/25/06 UMW Men's Soccer Falls in OT to Christopher Newport, 1-0 FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The University of Mary Washington dropped a 1-0 decision to Christopher Newport University on Wednesday to fall to 11-4 on the season. The Eagles allowed a goal one minute into the extra frame by CNU's Michael Caro on an assist from Kyle Allan after a defensive miscue by the Eagles. UMW outshot the Captains, 10-7, but had just one shot on frame the entire match. The Eagles had five corner kicks to three for CNU. Elliott Jones had three saves for the Eagles, and Matt Tengs had one stop for CNU. The Eagles will close the regular season on Friday when they visit Gallaudet University at 4 pm. BOXSCORE 10/21/06 #25 UMW Men's Soccer Falls at #3 York, 1-0 YORK, PA - The third-ranked York College men's soccer team used a goal by Andrew Wheeler in the 50th minute to defeat twenty-fifth ranked University of Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon to claim the top seed in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament next week. The Spartans improve to 13-0-2, while the Eagles fall to 11-3. Mary Washington had 12 shots to 10 for York, and outkicked the Spartans, 7-2, on corner kicks, but were unable to score. Each team missed a penalty kick in the game, and UMW had two yellow cards while York was carded with four yellow cards. Senior Elliott Jones had three saves for the Eagles, and made a daring charge to clear Wheeler with the ball outside the penalty box in the waning minutes. The Eagles, ranked third in the South region, will host Christopher Newport University on Wednesday at 3 pm. BOXSCORE 10/18/06 #25 UMW Men's Soccer Tops Marymount in CAC Action, 3-2
The Eagles jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but Marymount hung tough throughout. UMW senior midfielder Tommy Park scored the Eagles' first goal at 4:20 on an assist from Michael Johnson, booming a left footed shot from 25 yards out just inside the far left post. Seven minutes later, sophomore Stefan Melone scored on another long shot unassisted. Marymount cut the deficit to 2-1 with a goal by Mark Higdon in the 41st minute. UMW keeper Elliott Jones made a diving stop of a ball from MU's Chris Tipton, but the clearing ball went right to Higdon, who shot the ball into the vacant goal. Freshman Ryan Snyder gave the Eagles a 3-1 cushion in the 58th minute, heading a bounding ball from Park over the MU keeper and into goal. The Saints' Daniel Lozano capped the scoring by placing a ball through traffic at 72:28. The Eagles outshot the Saints, 21-9, and had eleven corner kicks to five for Marymount. Jones had two saves in 45 minutes, and Greg Savage didn't record a save in the final 45 minutes. Nick Anderesh had seven saves for Marymount. The Eagles will visit third-ranked York College on Saturday with first place in the CAC on the line. Game time starts at 2:30 pm. BOXSCORE 10/10/06 UMW Men's Soccer Tops Hood in CAC Action, 7-1
Senior Tommy Park opened the scoring for the Eagles in the sixth minute, and Johnson followed with his first goal in the tenth minute. Kooijman connected in the 15th minute on assists from Park and Johnson, as the Eagles held a 3-0 halftime advantage. Johnson scored on an assist from Ryan Taibl less than a minute into the second half, and then Taibl scored in the 59th minute. Kooijman made the score 6-0 three minutes later on a feed from Taibl. Hood's Shane McCarrick scored in the 77th minute off a free kick from Tom Noonan, and Chris Dolan capped the scoring for UMW in the 88th minute. The Eagles outshot the Blazers, 22-7, and each team had four corner kicks. Elliott Jones, Greg Savage, and Emmett Rutkowski each had one save for UMW, while Shawn Fernholz had seven saves for Hood. Salisbury got on the board first, scoring on their first shot, as Wijy Jones connected on an assist from Nick Malone just 2:55 into the game. UMW sophomore Tommy DiNuzzo (shown) knotted the score at one in the 21st minute with an unassisted goal that floated over the Salisbury keeper and sank beneath the crossbar. Salisbury's T.J. Nairn gave Salisbury the lead once again in the 35th minute on a penalty kick. Mary Washington tied the score just two minutes into the second half on a Tommy Park penalty kick, and Vincent Kooijman scored on a penalty kick in the 60th minute. From there, the Eagle defense withstood several quality chances by the Gulls, with senior Elliott Jones making four big second half saves, including a diving stop of a header by Dave Kroening in the closing minutes. UMW edged the Sea Gulls in shots, 8-7, and had six corner kicks to three for the Gulls. Jones had four saves for UMW, while Scott McGuire had one save for Salisbury. The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday when they host Hood College in another CAC contest starting at 4 pm. BOXSCORE 09/30/06 #17 UMW Men's Soccer Falls in OT to #25 NC Wesleyan FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The seventeenth-ranked University of Mary Washington men's soccer team dropped its second straight contest, a 1-0 overtime loss to #25 North Carolina Wesleyan College, on Saturday at the Battleground. UMW falls to 7-2, while the Bishops improve to 9-0. Osumano Ootu scored the game's lone goal with 3:11 remaining in overtime after a scrum in the penalty area. The Eagles outshot the Bishops, 13-9, and led in corner kicks, three to one. UMW had several quality chances, particularly in the first half, as one shot hit the goalpost, and another bounded through the penalty box, but weren't able to capitalize. Renato Corte had four saves for NC Wesleyan, and Greg Savage had two stops for UMW. The Eagles will host Catholic University on Wednesday at 4 pm. BOXSCORE 09/27/06 #17 UMW Men's Soccer Falls at W&L, 1-0 LEXINGTON, VA - Washington & Lee University's Josh Dodd scored on an assist from Josh Palmer seven minutes into the game, and the Generals made that score hold up in a 1-0 win over preiously undefeated and 17th-ranked University of Mary Washington on Wednesday in Lexington. The Generals improve to 7-0, while the Eagles fall to 7-1. The Eagles outshot the Generals, 13-10, and had eight corner kicks to one for W&L, but were unable to find the tying goal. Greg Savage had three saves for UMW, and Teddy Sheehy had four saves for Washington & Lee. The Eagles will host 25th ranked North Carolina Wesleyan College on Saturday at 2 pm. BOXSCORE 09/23/06 UMW Men's Soccer Tops Goucher, 2-0 TOWSON, MD - Freshman Ryan Snyder (Annandale, VA/WT Woodson) scored a goal and an assist to lead the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory at Goucher College on Saturday afternoon at Gopher Stadium. The Eagles improve to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in Capital Athletic Conference action. After a scoreless first half, Snyder connected for the first goal in the 72nd minute on an assist from fellow freshman Michael Johnson (Charlottesville, VA/Western Albemarle). Thirteen minutes later, Snyder found junior Vincent Kooijman (Schoorl, The Netherlands/Europena) for an insurance goal. Mary Washington outshot Goucher, 11-4. Junior Greg Savage (Ellicott City, MD/Ellicott City) had two saves for UMW, while Tom Feuerstein had five saves for the Gophers. MARY'S CITY, MD - Freshman forward Ryan Snyder continued his torrid scoring pace, as the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team defeated St. Mary's College, 3-0, on Wednesday at Seahawk Stadium. Snyder scored one goal and assisted on two others, moving his season totals to seven goals in four assists, as UMW improves to 6-0. Snyder opened the scoring in the 30th minute on an assist from fellow freshman Michael Johnson. Five minutes later, Snyder found junior Vincent Kooijman for his third goal of the season. In the 68th minute, Snyder assisted Luke Hostetter's goal, which capped the scoring. The Eagles outshot St. Mary's, 14-6, and had four corner kicks to one for the Seahawks. Greg Savage had three saves in goal for Mary Washington, while Rick Besore had five saves for St. Mary's. Greensboro's Eric Hatchett scored both of the Pride's goals, the first coming in the 17th minute, briefly giving the guests a 1-0 lead. Park would answer seven minutes later to knot the score, and sophomore Darien Ruggles put the Eagles ahead just before halftime, on an assist from Teddy Barry. Hatchett hit a laser shot from 20 yards out to knot the score at two less than four minutes into the second half, but the Eagles would score the final four goals of the game. Freshman Ryan Snyder provided the game winner in the 61st minute on an assist from Park, and Park booted a penalty kick in the 68th minute. Kooijman netted the final two scores for UMW, who is off to a 5-0 start for the first time since starting 6-0 in 2001. The Eagles outshot the Pride, 15-7, and had four corner kicks to two for the guests. Emmett Rutkowski made one save and Greg Savage had two saves for UMW, while Kurt Gardiner had no saves for Greensboro. UMW junior Luke Hostetter (Richmond, VA/Maggie Walker) opened the scoring on a free kick, as senior Tommy Park (Mount Rainier, MD/DeMatha) sent a free ball to Snyder, who slid the ball to Hostetter for the finish in the 13th minute. Freshman Matt Lawrey assisted Snyder in the 46th minute, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead, but Gettysburg's Garrett Bruno connected on a penalty kick one minute later to shave the margin to 2-1, which is where the game ended. The Eagles edged the Bullets in shots, 12-10, and had two corner kicks to five for Gettysburg. Freshman Emmett Rutkowski had four saves for the Eagles, while Adam Finkel had two saves for Gettysburg. The Eagles will visit Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday at 4 pm. No makeup has been set. The Eagles, 2-0, moved into the South Region rankings on Tuesday, as they stand sixth in the region. The Eagles will visit Gettysburg College on Saturday night at 7 pm. 09/03/06 UMW Men's Soccer Blanks Shenandoah, 3-0 FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Three freshmen scored goals on Sunday afternoon in the University of Mary Washington's 3-0 victory over Shenandoah University at the Battleground. Michael Johnson, Ryan Snyder, and Matt Lawrey all produced goals in their second collegiate game, as the Eagles improve to 2-0 on the season. Johnson opened the scoring in the 21st minute on a long chip from sophomore David Rodriguez. Six minutes later, Snyder took a chip from senior Tommy Park and volleyed the ball into goal with a defender on his hip, pushing the lead to 2-0. Lawrey provided the capper for the Eagles in the 80th minute, scoring unassisted after taking a loose ball at the 18-yard line and sending it into goal. The Eagles outshot the Hornets, 21-3, and had five corner kicks to one for SU. Elliott Jones and Greg Savage combined for the shutout, as Savage made two sves in 56 minutes of relief. Park netted his second goal in the 50th minute, taking a cross from junior Luke Hostetter (Richmond, VA/Maggie Walker) and headed the ball over the diving EMU goalkeeper. For the day, the Eagles outshot the Royals, 10-7, and had eight corner kicks to five for EMU. Senior Elliott Jones (Fredericksburg, VA/Herndon) made three saves for Mary Washington, while Jackson Maust and Zach Polloni combined for three saves for the Royals. UMW will host Shenandoah University, who fell to Marymount, 3-0, on Saturday, on Sunday at 3:30 pm. EMU will face Marymount at 1 pm at the Battleground.
