FREDERICKSBURG, VA - University of Mary Washington sophomore John James defeated Middlebury College's Alex Scott, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, in the first round, but then fell to Gustavus Adolphus' Jesse Brauer, 6-4, 6-1, in the second round of the NCAA Division III men's tennis signles flight championship on Friday at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. James ends his season with the most season wins in school history (27), and gained ITA All-America honors as well. BRACKET 05/05/07 #14 UMW Men's Tennis Falls to #7 Trinity in NCAA Tournament Second Round, 5-2 FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The University of Mary Washington men's tennis team fell to #7 Trinity (TX) University, 5-2, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at the Battleground on Saturday. The Eagles close the season with a 22-9 record. UMW fell behind, 2-1, after doubles, with the number two team of Randy Loden and Jon Pollak winning, 8-5. UMW fell at one, 8-6, and at three, 8-4. Trinity's James Furr won at three singles, 6-2, 6-1, and then Varun Munjal won at five singles, 6-3, 6-4, before John James won at one singles for the Eagles, 6-3, 6-3. But the Tigers' David Tran earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at four to clinch the match. Trinity will face Johns Hopkins University on Sunday at noon, with the winner advancing to the national championships hosted by Washington University on May 16-21. The Eagles found themselves trailing after doubles, 2-1, as Randy Loden and Jon Pollak were UMW's lone victorious doubles team, as they won, 8-2, at number two. The Eagles rebounded to claim the first set in all six singles matches, with Loden winning at two singles, 6-1, 6-2; Jason Dunn winning at three singles, 6-2, 6-0; Eddie Carver winning at four, 6-3, 6-1; and Zach Detweiler winning at six, 6-2, 6-1. UMW gets a rematch with Trinity, who received a first round bye and defeated the Eagles earlier in the year at the ITA National Indoor Championships in February, 6-3. Match time will be 2 pm, and will follow a 10 am match between Washington & Lee University and Johns Hopkins University, who defeated Messiah College, 5-0, on Friday at the Battleground. ST. MARY'S CITY, MD - University of Mary Washington sophomore John James has been named as the CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Year, and head coach Todd Helbling is the 2007 CAC Coach of the Year, in voting by the league's coaches. The Eagles were represented on the All-CAC first team with James at one, Randy Loden at two, Eddie Carver at five, and Jon Pollak at six earning first team honors, and Jason Dunn and Evan Goff taking second team kudos. In doubles, James and Zach Detweiler at one and Loden and Pollak at two were first team choices, and Goff and Carver were named to the second team. RELEASE 04/30/07 UMW Men's Tennis to Host Methodist in NCAA Tournament INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The NCAA Division III men's tennis committee has released the 2007 tournament bracket on Monday night. The University of Mary Washington will host Methodist College in a six-team sectional at 2 pm on Friday, with the winner advancing to face Trinity (TX) University on Saturday at 2 pm. On the other side of the bracket, Johns Hopkins University faces Messiah College on Friday at 10 am, with the winner advancing to face Washington & Lee University on Saturday at 10 am. Saturday's winners will meet each other with the right to advance to the national championship hosted by Washington (MO) University on May 16-21 on Sunday at 12 pm. The Eagles improve to 21-8 on the year, and will advance to the NCAA Championships on May 5-6. The Eagles held a 2-1 lead after doubles, with Jon Pollak and Randy Loden winning at two, 8-4, and Evan Goff and Eddie Carver winning at three, 8-1. In singles, John James won at one, 6-1, 6-2; Evan Goff won at four, 6-3, 6-3; Eddie Carver won at five, 6-1, 6-0; and Pollak won at six singles, 6-1, 6-0. UMW wins the CAC title for the 13th time in league history, and for the eighth straight year. SCORES 04/15/07 #11 UMW Men's Tennis Sweeps Washington MD, 9-0 CHESTERTOWN, MD - Visiting Mary Washington, ranked ninth in Division III and second in the Atlantic South region, topped host Washington College, the 11th-ranked team in the region, 9-0, in a men's tennis match today inside the Lifetime Fitness Center. The Eagles improved to 17-8 with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 7-7 with the loss. Mary Washington took a 3-0 lead after doubles. The most competitive doubles match was at No. 1, where Zach Detweiler and Randy Loden posted an 8-5 win over WC sophomores Rafael Roldan and Brian Danver. Mary Washington's John James, ranked seventh in Division III in singles and second in the Atlantic South, posted a 6-1, 7-5, win over Roldan at No. 1 singles. The match score was 6-3. The Eagles trailed, 2-1, after doubles, as they won at three doubles, Evan Goff and Eddie Carver won, 8-3. SWARTHMORE SCORES 04/10/07 #9 UMW Men's Tennis Tops Christopher Newport, Hood, and St. Mary's FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The University of Mary Washington men's tennis team defeated Christopher Newport University, Hood College, and St. Mary's College on Wednesday to improve to 16-7 on the year. The Eagles topped Christopher Newport, 7-2, to open the day. UMW won at two and three doubles, and then at two through six singles against the Captains. Winners in singles included Jason Dunn, Evan Goff, Eddie Carver, Jon Pollak, and Zach Detweiler. The Eagles then disposed of Hood, 9-0. The Eagles won at one doubles, 8-1, and swept two and three doubles, 8-0. The Eagles then won in all six singles matches, 6-0, 6-0. The Eagles stand at 13-6 on the season. Against Johns Hopkins, the Eagles won at one and two doubles to take a 2-1 lead entering singles, but dropped four of six singles matches. Jason Dunn won at three and Evan Goff won at five in three sets each for UMW's singles points. The Eagles swept Goucher, 9-0. The Gophers (2-5) appeared headed for at least one win in doubles play when the tandem of Andrew Ortiz and Wynn Thane jumped out to a 4-0 lead over Zach Detweiler and Randy Loden at No. 1. JHU RESULTS GOUCHER RESULTS 03/31/07 #9 UMW Men's Tennis Tops Salisbury, 7-2 SALISBURY, MD - The #9 University of Mary Washington men's tennis team defeated Salisbury University, 7-2, on Saturday to improve to 12-5 overall and 3-0 in Capital Athletic Conference play. Zach Detweiler and Randy Loden were victorious over Salisbury's regionally-ranked number one team, 8-4, and the Eagles also won at three doubles to take a 2-1 lead entering singles. Against TCNJ, the Eagles dropped doubles matches at one and three, with John James and Jon Pollak winning at two, 8-2. But the Eagles won five of six singles matches for the 6-3 win. James, Randy Loden, Jason Dunn, Evan Goff, and Jon Pollak earned wins. The Eagles won all three doubles matches and all six singles flights against Catholic in a 9-0 win. James, Eric Sundstrom, J.J. Proffitt, Zach McGonigal, Govinda Avasarala, and Zach Sasser won in singles. UMW will visit Salisbury University on Saturday at 1 pm. TCNJ RESULTS CUA RESULTS 03/24/07 #9 UMW Men's Tennis Edges #17 Washington & Lee, 5-4 FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The #9 University of Mary Washington men's tennis team defeated #17 Washington & Lee University, 5-4, on Saturday at the Battleground to improve to 9-5 overall. The Generals fall to 12-2. After winning at two and three doubles, the Eagles received singles wins from Randy Loden at two (3-6, 6-1, 6-1), Evan Goff at five (5-7, 7-5, 6-4), and Jon Pollak at six (2-6, 6-4, 6-4). Goff's win proved to be the match winner, and came in excitingg fashion, as he dropped the first set, and overcame two match points to claim victory. The Eagles got wins from sophomore Randy Loden at two singles, defeating William Ellison, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (3). The Eagles defeated Chapman Univeristy, 7-2, and topped Occidental College, 8-1. The Eagles will continue Spring break in California on Wednesday, when they visit Claremont Mudd Scripps at 5:30 pm. PETER, MN - The University of Mary Washington men's tennis team, ranked eleventh in the nation, defeated 23rd ranked Swarthmore College, 7-2, on Saturday night in St. Peter, Minnesota. UMW finishes the event in seventh place, and improves to 3-3 on the season. The Eagles won just one doubles match, as they fell at one and three doubles by identical 8-6 scores. But singles was a different story, as UMW won at all six flights. The Eagles will be back in action on March 4 when they visit Chapman College at 10 am PST. FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The eleventh-ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team swept Roanoke College, 7-0, on Saturday at the University Indoor Tennis Center to improve to 2-1 on the season, and 1-0 against Division III opponents. The Eagles won each doubles match, and then won all six singles flights in straight sets. COMPLETE RESULTS 02/10/07 #11 UMW Men's Tennis Splits with George Mason, Richmond FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The eleventh-ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team split its season opening matches with Division I George Mason University and the University of Richmond on Saturday, topping the Patriots, 7-0, and falling to the Spiders, 6-1. Sophomore John James picked up UMW's point against Richmond, winning 7-6 (4), 5-7, (10-5) at number one singles. The Eagles, 1-1 on the season, will be back in action on February 17 when they host Roanoke College at 2 pm. The men are 11th in the nation, and second in the Atlantic South Region, behind only defending national champion Emory. Sophomore John James is ranked sixth in the nation, and second in the region. James and sophomore Randy Loden are eleventh in the region in doubles. The women are 17th in the nation, and fifth in the Atlantic South region. Stephanie Kurti is 16th in the region in singles, and Amy Sheetz is 19th. Kurti and Becky Morse-Karzen is ninth in the region in doubles. 10/14/06 James Takes 6th Place at ITA Nationals FORT MYERS, FL - University of Mary Washington sophomore John James (Mount Kisco, NY) fell to Phalkun Mam of Whitman College, 6-3, 7-5, on Saturday morning in the fifth place match at the ITA Small College National Championships in Fort Myers, FL. James, in his first ITA National Championship, finishes in sixth place, and earns ITA All-America honors. James defeated second-seeded Jesse Brauer of Gustavus Adolphus, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, in the consolation round of the Championships on Friday. He fell to eventual champion Mike Starr of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the first round on Friday, 6-0, 6-3. The men's tennis schedule will resume in February, 2007. James defeated William Mason-Deese in the first round, 6-0, 6-0, and Kevin Ma, 6-0, 6-0, in the second round. In quarterfinal action on Sunday, James defeated third seed Jon Reiss of Swarthmore, 6-1, 6-4, to move on to the semifinals on Monday morning. In total, James lost just eleven points in five matches en route to his title. James will advance to the Oct. 12-15 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Small College Championships at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers.
