UCSC's Seeberger, Templeman Win 2006 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Doubles Championship

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - University of California-Santa Cruz senior Shane Templeman and junior Matt Seeberger captured the 2006 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Doubles Championship on Monday at the University of Mary Washington. The duo defeated Ari Beilin and Alex Scott of Middlebury, 6-4, 6-1, for the title.
The doubles title is the second straight for Seeberger, who won the 2005 title with Matt Brunner. The Slugs were equally effective with the serve and breaking Middlebury's, particularly in the second set.

Bates' Boe-Wiegaard Claims 2006 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Singles Championship

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Bates College senior Will Boe-Wiegaard captured the 2006 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Singles Championship on Monday at the University of Mary Washington. Boe-Wiegaard, who fell in last year's championship final, was victorious this time, defeating Brian Waldron of Middlebury College, 6-4, 6-3.
Boe-Wiegaard turned in crucial service breaks in both sets. In the first set, Waldron broke Boe-Wiegaard, who promptly broke back in taking the first set, 6-4. Boe-Wiegaard came up with a service break to take a 3-1 lead, and held through until the last point, also earned on a service break.

Eagles Soar to 2006 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Emory University claimed singles victories at one, two, three, and six singles to capture the 2006 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis National Championship, 4-1, over Middlebury College on Friday at the University of Mary Washington.
Emory started singles trailing, 1-0, after dropping the doubles point. Middlebury won at one doubles, 8-3, and at three doubles, 8-5.
Yoji Masuoka was the first winner off the courts, winning at three singles, 6-1, 6-1. Emory's Michael Goodwin then closed out his match at number one, 6-4, 6-2, to put the Eagles in the lead. Michael Kaufman, who was playing his first singles match of the week at number six, won in three sets after dropping the first set, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, to put Emory on the cusp of the title. Patrick Redmond closed out the win with a 6-0, 6-4 win at number two.
Emory wins its second national championship in men's tennis, having also won the title in 2003.

Gusties Tops Williams, 4-3, in Third Place Final
FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Gustavus Adolphus' Andy Bryan won a three set match at number four singles to propel the Gusties to a 4-3 team victory over Williams College in the NCAA Division III Men's tennis Championship Third Place match on Friday at the University of Mary Washington.
Gustavus won the doubles point by winning at number one and two doubles. Adam Morgan and Brett Morse-Karzen won at one, 8-4, while Bryan and his twin brother Roy won at two, 8-1.
Williams won three of the first five singles matches off the courts to even the team score, but Bryan overcame a 7-5 second set loss to capture the third, 6-2.

Emory Tops Williams, 4-1, To Reach National Final
FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Emory University used singles wins at one, two, and three singles after claiming the doubles point to top Williams College, 4-1, and advance to the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship match on Thursday at the Battleground Athletic Complex.
The Eagles won the doubles point after Patrick Redmond and Michael Kaufman won at three doubles, 8-1, and Hardy Ehlers and Jesse Ferlianto won at two, 8-4. Redmond won, 6-1, 6-3, at number two singles, and Yoji Masuoka won at three, 6-3, 6-0, to push the Eagles to the brink of team victory. Williams' Bryan Monier won at six singles, 7-6, 6-1, to push the team score to 3-1, but EU's Michael Goowdin (shown) clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win at one singles.
The Eagles will take on Middlebury College on Friday at 1 pm for the 2006 national championship.

Middlebury sweeps Gustavus Adolphus, 4-0, To Reach National Final
FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Fourth-ranked Middlebury College swept top-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College, 4-0, in Thursday semifinals at the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis National Championships held at UMW.
The Panthers jumped out to an emotional lead after doubles, as for the first time in the week's event, the first two doubles matches to finish were split. Ari Beilin and Alex Scott won at one for Middlebury, 8-2, but Gustavus' Loren Collins and Jesse Brauer won at three, 8-6, making two doubles the decisive match. Kevin Bergesen and Nate Edmunds of Middlebury downed Andy Bryan and Roy Bryan, 8-6, giving MC a 1-0 team lead.
The Panthers won at number five, with Salih Unsal winning, 6-4, 6-4, and won at number two, with Ari Beilin winning, 6-3, 6-2. Brian Waldron (shown) clinched the match for the Panthers with a 6-2, 6-2 win at number one.
Middlebury will advance to the national championship match on Friday at 1 pm against Emory University.

Williams Tops Claremont Mudd Scripps, 4-3, in Wednesday Quarterfinal
FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Fifth-ranked Williams College edged Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 4-3, on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships at the Battleground.
Williams dropped the doubles point, as CMS' Guillaume Schils and Lawrence Wang topped Scott MacKenzie and Gary Simonette at one doubles, 8-5, and Ellison and Feldhausen of CMS topped Kivitz and Thatcher, 8-3.
The Ephs began the comeback, with Ted Haley and Bryan Monier winning at five and six singles, but The Stags evened the match score at two following Wang's win at number two. The rains began to fall, and the remaining matches were moved indoors. Williams' Daniel Greenberg won in three sets at one singles, 6-3, 1-6, 6-0, to give the Ephs a 3-2 lead, but CMS' Jack DePaolo edged Gary Simonette at four, 6-4, 7-6.
The final match featured Jeff Kivitz of Williams and Eric Chow of CMS. Kivitz edged Chow in a pair of tie breakers, 7-6, 7-6, giving Williams the 4-3 team win.
Williams will take on Emory University on Thursday in a national semifinal starting at 2 pm.

Emory Blanks DePauw, 4-0, in Wednesday Quarterfinal
FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Second-ranked Emory University was victorious at one and three doubles, and then captured singles wins at two, three and five singles in dowining DePauw University, 4-0, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Men's tennis Championship, played at the Battleground on Wednesday.
Michael Goodwin and Yoji Masuoka won at one doubles, 8-2, and Patrick Redmond and Kaufman won at three, 8-3. In singles play, Redmond defeated Kortney Keith, 6-4, 6-1 at number two; Masuoka defeated Scott Swanson at three singles, 6-2, 6-3; and Jesse Ferlianto downed Jeff Zanchelli, 6-2, 7-5.
Emory moves on to face the winner of Wednesday's match between Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Williams on Thursday in the national semifinal at 2 pm.

Gustavus Adolphus Tops Swarthmore, 4-0, in Wednesday Quarterfinal
FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Top-ranked Gustavus Adolphus jumped out to an early lead by winning the doubles point and won at three, four, and six singles in a 4-0 win over Swarthmore College on Wednesday morning at the Battleground Athletic Complex.
Andy Bryan and Roy Bryan won at two doubles, 8-2, and Loren Collins and Jesse Brauer won at three doubles, 8-2. In singles, Brauer defeated Brian Park, 6-2, 6-4; Andy Bryan defeated Jon Lo, 6-2, 6-2; and Brett Morse-Karzen downed Sam Sidhu, 6-2, 6-1, at six singles.
Gustavus Adolphus moves on to face Middlebury College, who defeated Trinity TX University on Thursday morning in the national semifinals at 9 am.

Middlebury sweeps Trinity, 4-0, in Wednesday Quarterfinal
FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Fourth-ranked Middlebury College swept Trinity (TX) University, 4-0, in the NCAA national quarterfinals on Wednesday morning at the Battleground Athletic Complex.
The Panthers won at one and three doubles, before winning at two, three, and four singles. Winners for the Panthers included Ari Beilin at two (6-2, 6-1), Nathan Edmunds at three (6-4, 6-0), and Conrad Olson at four (6-1, 6-0).
Middlebury will take on Gustavus Adolphus on Thursday in the national semifinals at 9 am.

UMW to Host 2006 NCAA® Division III Men's Tennis Championships

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The University of Mary Washington will host the 2006 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships on May 17-22 at the award-winning Battleground Athletic Complex. The University of Mary Washington is located in Fredericksburg, Virginia, less than an hour from Washington, DC, and Richmond, VA, metropolitan areas.
The championships will begin on Wednesday, May 17, with team quarterfinal action. Matches will begin at 9:00 am and 2:00 pm. On Thursday, May 18, semifinal matches will occur at 10:00 am and 2:00 pm, with the championship and consolation matches taking place on Friday, May 19 at 9 am and noon, respectively.
The individual portion of the championship will begin on May 20, with singles first and second round action taking place at 9:00 am and noon, with doubles first round matches starting at 3:00 pm. Singles quarterfinals and semifinals will take place on Sunday at noon and 2:30 pm, with doubles semifinals starting at 4:00 pm. The championship matches will be played on Monday at 9:00 am.
