04/24/07 Rowell, Spaulding, Sifer Named to All-CAC Softball Teams ST. MARY'S CITY, MD - The University of Mary Washington saw junior Kerri Spaulding and sophomore Kirsten Rowell named to the All-Capital Athletic Conference softball first team, as was released by the league office on Tuesday. Junior Ashley Sifer was selected as an at-large choice by the league's coaches. Spaulding, an outfielder, started all 43 games for the Eagles, and batted .312 for the season with team highs of 13 doubles and four triples. She led the Eagles with 35 runs scored and 30 RBI. Rowell emerged as one of the top pitchers in the conference, going 14-9 with a 2.15 ERA with 118 strikeouts against just 25 walks. Sifer, a third baseman, hit .293 with 18 RBI for the Eagles, who finished 24-19, with the third-most wins in school history. RELEASE 04/21/07 UMW Softball Falls to Salisbury, York in CAC Tournament SALISBURY, MD - The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped a pair of games at the Capital Athletic Conference tournament on Saturday, being eliminated and having its season end with a 24-19 record. The Eagles dropped its opener, 9-0, to Salisbury, and then lost to York, 11-3. In the Salisbury game, the Sea Gulls scored twice in the first, once in the second and third, and five times in the fourth for a 9-0 win. The Eagles managed just two hits, with Kaitlin Petrella doubling and Victoria Moody singling. Kirsten Rowell took the loss, allowing eight hits and eight earned runs in 3.1 innings, with four walks and three strikeouts. Mary Washington saw York score five runs in the first, and six more in the sixth, in an 11-3 loss to end the Eagles' tournament chances. The Eagles scored three runs in the fifth. Cathy Hull had two hits, and Kaitlin Petrella added a double for UMW. The Eagles close the season with a 24-19 overall record. SALISBURY BOXSCORE YORK BOXSCORE 04/18/07 UMW Softball Tops Gallaudet in CAC Tourney 1st Round, 15-0
Hull doubled and scored on an error to plate the first run, and then Sarah Axelson drove in Victoria Moody to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead after one inning. Hull followed with a solo home run in the second, and then UMW scored six times in the third inning. Katherine Davis, Melissa Bjorklund, and Hull each drove in runs with doubles. In the fourth, UMW scored six more times, with Nicole Foster and Rowell each drove in runs with triples in the frame. The Eagles will face Salisbury in the weekend portion of the tournament on Saturday at approximately noon, or 30 minutes following the 10 am game. BOXSCORE 04/17/07 UMW Softball Sweeps Hood in Regular Season Finale FREDERICK, MD - The Hood College softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader to the visiting University of Mary Washington Eagles, 3-1 and 9-0 in five innings, Tuesday afternoon at the Hood Softball Complex. Hood moves to 9-13 while Mary Washington ups its record to 23-17. The Eagles snapped a scoreless tie in the second inning on back-to-back solo homers by Sarah Axelson and Katherine Davis to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. UMW then tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Catherine Hull. Hood mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh when Tamara Maggard led off the inning with a walk and Jamie Gardner singled to centerfield. The Kara Robert lined a basehit into centerfield which was bobbled by Jamie Clevenger, allowing Maggard to score Hood's first run of the contest. Ashley Lenhart, representing the potential game-winning run, lined a rocket back at pitcher Kirsten Rowell who speared it for the first out of the inning. The Blazers were unable to push across another run as Katherine Law struck out and Sara Wastler grounded out to short to end the threat. Maggard was the tough-luck loser, tossing 6.1 innings and allowing just three earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and no walks. In the nightcap, UMW's Katherine Matusik got plenty of run support and took a no-hitter into the fifth inning as the Eagles won 9-0 in five innings. With one out in the bottom of the fifth, freshman Stephanie Gardner blooped a fly ball to centerfield. Clevenger raced in from center to make a sliding attempt at the ball, but she trapped it and Gardner reached safely. Pinch hitter Jen Willison walked and Law reached on a bunt single to load the bases once again. But Matusik retired Law on strikes and Wastler on a grounder to seal the victory for the Eagles. Jamie Gardner took the loss, allowing nine runs on 13 hits with six strikeouts and one walk. Matusik struck out eight Blazers and walked one for UMW. The Eagles will host gallaudet University in the CAC Tournament opener on Wednesday at 5 pm. BOXSCORE BOXSCORE 04/12/07 UMW Softball Splits Doubleheader at VA Wesleyan VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Wednesday doubleheader at Virginia Wesleyan College, dropping the first game, 2-1, before erupting for 13 runs in six innings in the nightcap in a 13-1 win. UMW closes the regular season with a 21-17 record. In the opener, Kirsten Rowell scattered six hits, but the Marlins plated two runs while the Eagles could manage three hits in a 2-1 defeat. The second game saw Kerri Spaulding, Ashley Sifer, and Sarah Axelson each collect two hits and two RBI. The top four batters in the UMW lineup scored two runs each, as the Eagles scored three in the first, three in the fourth, one in the fifth, and six in the sixth inning. Katherine Matusik allowed five hits in five innings in picking up her fourth win of the year, with one earned run, and three strikeouts. The Eagles await their CAC Tournament opponent this week pending Saturday's York/Salisbury doubleheader. BOXSCORE BOXSCORE 04/09/07 UMW Softball Drops CAC Twinbill at Salisbury SALISBURY, MD - The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped a doubleheader at Salisbury University on Monday afternoon. The Eagles dropped the first game, 2-1, and fell in the nightcap, 9-1. UMW falls to 20-16 on the year. The Eagles fell behind, 2-0, in the opener, but plated a run in the sixth inning to cut the final deficit to 2-1. Salisbury's Waskewicz hit her eighth home run of the year to open the scoring in the fourth, and then Salisbury scored an unearned run in the fifth. Kirsten Rowell allowed one earned run in six innings, allowing four hits, a walk, and two strikeouts. Game two saw Salisbury rap out nine hits in a 9-1 win. UMW's Kaitlin Petrella homer for the Eagles' only run. The Eagles will visit Virginia Wesleyan College on Wednesday at 3 pm for a doubleheader. GAME ONE BOXSCORE GAME TWO BOXSCORE 04/03/07 UMW Softball Gains 20th Win; Splits Twinbill With Lynchburg FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Sophomore pitcher Kirsten Rowell continued her outstanding pitching to lead the University of Mary Washington softball team to a 1-0 win over Lynchburg College in the first game of the two teams' doubleheader at the Battleground on Tuesday. The win marked the Eagles' 20th win of the season. UMW dropped game two, 4-0. Rowell allowed just two hits in seven innings, striking out eight and walking none. The Eagles plated the only run of the game with three hits in the fourth inning. Kerri Spaulding singled to right and advanced to third on a single by Ashley Sifer. With one out, Kat Davis reached on an infield signle to load the bases, and pinch hitter Sarah Axelson was hit by a pitch to plate the lone run of the game. The Eagles collected six hits in the nightcap, but were unable to plate a run. Cathy Hull had two hits to lead UMW. Nicole Foster allowed three earned runs in four innings in the loss, with Katherine Matusik pitching three scoreless innings in relief. The Eagles will visit Salisbury University on Saturday for a doubleheader at noon. GAME ONE BOXSCORE GAME TWO BOXSCORE 04/01/07 UMW Softball Sweeps Villa Julie, 5-4 and 9-1
In the opener, UMW scored single runs in the first, second, and third innings, but the Mustangs scored two in the third and one in the fifth to tie the score. The Eagles plated a run in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-3 lead, but the Mustangs tied the score again in the seventh. Sophomore Cathy Hull singled and scored on Kerri Spaulding's double to plate the winning run. Kirsten Rowell scattered 10 hits in picking up the win. The Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning of the second game, and added a run in the third and three in the fifth. Hull plated the clinching run with a two out single. Nicole Foster earned the win in game two, allowing five hits in four innings, and Kaitlin Petrella came on to strike out two in the fifth. The Eagles will host Lynchburg College on Tuesday at 2:30 pm for a doubleheader. GAME ONE BOXSCORE GAME TWO BOXSCORE 03/31/07 UMW Softball Splits Doubleheader at Shenandoah WINCHESTER, VA - The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Saturday doubleheader with Shenandoah University, winning the opener 6-5 and falling in the nightcap, 5-4, despite scoring four runs in the seventh inning. In game one, eight different Eagles collected hits, but UMW needed a run in the top of the eighth inning for the win. Melissa Bjorklund scored on an error after moving to third on a sacrifice bunt by Victoria Moody for the decisive run. Sophomore Kirsten Rowell earned the win for the Eagles, allowing two earned runs on five hits in eight innings, walking one and striking out eight. In the second game, UMW fell behind, 5-0, but rallied for four runs in the seventh, only to fall just short in a 5-4 loss. Junior third baseman Ashley Sifer paced the Eagle offense with three of their eight hits. The Eagles will host Villa Julie College on Sunday at 1 pm. GAME ONE BOXSCORE GAME TWO BOXSCORE 03/29/07 UMW Softball Drops Doubleheader at Eastern Mennonite HARRISONBURG, VA - The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped a doubleheader at Eastern Mennonite University on Thursday to fall to 16-12 overall. UMW dropped the first game, 1-0, with only one hit. EMU starting pitcher Viafora had 13 strikeouts. In the nightcap, the Eagles lost, 5-1, as both teams had five hits and three errors. UMW will visit Shenandoah University on Saturday at 2 pm. GAME ONE BOXSCORE GAME TWO BOXSCORE 03/28/07 UMW Softball Sweeps Gallaudet in CAC Action; Rowell Throws No-Hitter FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The University of Mary Washington softball team swept a doubleheader from Gallaudet University on Wednesday at the Battleground, winning both games in five innings by 8-0 scores. In the opener, sophomore Kirsten Rowell threw a no hitter, striking out nine in five innings, with no walks. The lone Gallaudet runner to reach base reached on an error. In game one, the Eagles scored two runs in the first inning, two in the third, and four in the fourth. Junior Kerri Spaulding went 3-3 with three runs scored, and scored the eighth run with a steal of home. Cathy Hull went 1-1 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Jamie Clevenger tripled for UMW. In the nightcap, The Eagles scored five runs in the first, one in the third, and two in the fifth. Emily Peisach, Catherine Bundrick, and Jamie Clevenger each had three hits for UMW, with Bundrick driving in three runs. Hull went 2-2 with three RBI. Katherine Matusik allowed just two hits in five innings for UMW,walking none and striking out six. The Eagles will visit Eastern Mennonite University on Thursday for a 2:30 pm twinbill. In game one, the Eagles fell behind, 2-0, but scored three runs in the fourth to claim a 3-2 win. Kerri Spaulding led off with a double and scored on Hull's RBI single. Kat Davis knocked in Hull with a single, and Jamie Clevenger scored Kaitlin Petrella with a single with the go ahead run. Kirsten Rowell earned the win by allowing two runs in seven innings, walking one and striking out five. The second game saw UMW grab a 3-0 lead, but York scoring five unanswered runs. In the bottom of the seventh, Melissa Bjorklund singled and advanced to second when Victoria Moody was hit by a pitch. After an error to load the bases, Hull laced a triple to right center field, clearing the bases and giving UMW a one run win. Rowell got the win in relief, as she allowed one run in one inning of work. Davis and Jamie Clevenger each had two hits in the opener, and Hull, Spaulding, and Davis each had two hits in the finale. Hull added four RBI. The Eagles will host Gallaudet University on Wednesday at 2:30 pm. GAME ONE BOXSCORE GAME TWO BOXSCORE 03/22/07 UMW Softball Drops CAC Doubleheader at Catholic WASHINGTON, DC - The Catholic University softball squad made history Thursday evening by sweeping the University of Mary Washington Eagles (12-10, 0-2 CAC) in both teams' first Capital Athletic Conference games of the season. The Cards won the first game 2-1 and came from behind to get the second 6-5, marking the first time that Catholic has defeated Mary Washington in conference play. Mary Washington scored in the top of the first when Melissa Bjorklund singled, advanced to second on an error, and scored on Victoria Moody's RBI. CUA got on the board in the third inning thanks to a pair of walks and a single by junior Kara Walker, which brought both runners in to make it 2-1 which would be the final. In the first game, the Cards had just three hits but held Mary Washington to five. Elyse Papianni recorded the win for the Cards with one strikeout and no earned runs. Katherine Matusik took the tough luck loss for UMW. The second game much more of a battle, as UMW led the Cards, 3-0, at one point. After allowing two runs in the first and one in the second, CUA scored two runs in the third and three in the fifth. Heather Holley started the seventh for CUA, and singled to left and advanced as Rachel Marrion laid down a textbook bunt making it safe to first. Kelly Lukacs came up in the three spot and produced the game winning hit to right to score Holley and win the game 6-5. UMW will host York College of PA on Saturday in another CAC doubleheader starting at 1 pm. GAME ONE BOXSCORE GAME TWO BOXSCORE 03/14/07 UMW Softball Sweeps Mary Baldwin in Wednesday Twinbill FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The University of Mary Washington softball team evened its season record at 8-8 with a doubleheader sweep of Mary Baldwin College on Wednesday at the Battleground. Game scores were 15-0 and 7-0. In the opener, junior Melissa Bjorklund went 3-3 with two runs scored and two RBI, Victoria Moody and Kaitlin petrella each tripled, and Cathy Hull doubled to pace the Eagle offense, as UMW scored 15 runs in the shortened five inning game. Pitcher Nicole Foster allowed just two hits in five innings, with no walks or runs and six strikeouts. The nightcap saw the Eagles win, 7-0, behind a triple and home run from Kerri Spaulding and the four-hit shutout pitching of Kirsten Rowell, who walked none and struck out five. Katherine Davis and Sarah Axelson doubled for UMW. The Eagles will host Polytechnic University on Saturday at 1 pm. GAME ONE BOXSCORE GAME TWO BOXSCORE 03/03/07 UMW Softball Swept at VA Wesleyan Tournament VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped two games on Friday night and two games on Saturday at the Virginia Wesleyan College Tournament, falling to 1-5 on the season. On Friday, the Eagles fell to Emory and Henry College, 3-0, and then 5-2 to Christopher Newport University in eight innings. In that game, sophomore shortstop Cathy Hull hit a two-run homer, and sophomore Kirsten Rowell allowed eight hits in wight innings, striking out five and walking none. On Saturday, the Eagles fell to Methodist College, 6-2, and to Moravian College, 5-0. Melissa Bjorklund and Cathy Hull each had hits in the Methodist game. The Eagles will host Mary Baldwin College on March 14 at 2:30 pm. 02/24/07 UMW Softball Opens With Twinbill Split With Messiah College FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The University of Mary Washington softball team opened the 2007 season with a doubleheader split with Messiah College on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles dropped the opener, 4-2, before winning the nightcap, 1-0. In game one, senior catcher Sarah Lance paced the Eagle offense with two hits, and Kerri Spaulding, Jamie Clevenger, and Melissa Bjorklund each doubled, but the Falcons scored in the first, second, fourth, and seventh innings to earn the win. Katherine Matusik took the loss for the Eagles, allowing seven hits and three earned runs in seven innings, walking two and striking out eight. In game two, Ashley Sifer knocked in Victoria Moody after Moody doubled in the only run of the game in a 1-0 win. Clevenger and Bjorklund also had hits for the Eagles. Sophomore Kirsten Rowell got the win, striking out three and walking one in seven innings. The Eagles will play in the Virginia Wesleyan College Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
