Track & Field 2006 in Review
Men's Track & Field 2006 in Review The UMW men's track & field team saw several breakout performances in 2006, and saw the outstanding career of All-American James Eberhardt conclude at the NCAA Division III National Championships. The indoor season started with a bang, as Matt Heidman broke the indoor school mark in the 60 meter high hurdles. Freshman Justin German, sophomore Sean O’Neill, and the distance relays also emerged as some of the top competitors in indoor season, and that success carried over to outdoor season. The Eagle men won four events at the annual Battleground Relays which the teams annually host at the Battleground, and then won five more events at the CAC Championships. Jason Istvan, Cameron Rice, the 4x400 relay, and Eberhardt brought home conference titles. Women's Track & Field 2006 in Review For the thirteenth consecutive season, the Mary Washington women's track and field team captured the Capital Athletic Conference championship, thanks to an unparalleled 13 first place finishes at the CAC meet. A versatile group of champions donned the navy, gray, and white for Coach Soper in 2006, and most should return for 2007. CAC Champions Carissa Culbreath (discus) and Kate O'Shea (javelin) are graduates. But expected to return will be CAC individual champions Christine Wuebker (100, 200), Melanie Walter (400), Kelly Osborn (800), Allison Hazlett (5000), Crystal Capone (100 hurdles, long jump, triple jump) and Mae Winchester (400 hurdles). Culbreath went on to claim UMW Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the highest honor bestowed upon any athlete at the school.
