2006 University of Mary Washington Volleyball Season in Review
Leading the way for the Eagles was sophomore outside hitter Kelley Hueber, who repeated as an All-Capital Athletic Conference selection for the second straight season after hitting a team-best .330 with 314 kills and just 59 errors all year in 773 attempts. Hueber showed her defensive prowess as well, finishing third on the team with 230 digs. Freshman Anne Lutkenhaus showed great potential as well, as she hit .230 with 243 kills, a team-high 52 service aces, and 303 digs. Sophomore libero Sam Harper provided a team-high 308 digs, and freshman setter Lindsey Scott dished out 607 assists after entering the starting lineup early in the year. Up front, hitters Kat Carter and Sarah Tighe continued to improve, as Carter registered 91 kills, 48 digs, and 39 blocks despite missing some time with injuries, and Tighe scored 114 kills and led the team with 84 blocks. The Eagles opened the season at Washington College, where they won matches over Cabrini College and the host Shorewomen by 3-0 scores. After a 3-1 loss at home to Virginia Wesleyan College, the Eagles took three of four matches at the Buttermaker Tournament hosted by Muhlenberg College, defeating Centenary College, Muhlenberg, and MIT, to finish in a three-way tie for the top spot at the event. Scott was named to the all-tournament team in her first four matches as a collegian. The Eagles dropped a narrow five game match at York College to open the conference slate, and a 3-1 loss to Bridgewater followed. The Eagles then won three straight, with wins over Messiah College, Catholic University, and Trinity College at the CUA Guetle Invitational. Hueber took MVP honors at the event, and Scott was also named to the all-tournament team. UMW followed with a win over Lynchburg sandwiched by losses to the two eventual CAC Tournament finalists, Gallaudet and Marymount, including the five-gamer in Arlington to the Saints. The Eagles fell by the narrowest of margins in that one, 30-27, 26-30, 28-30, 30-27, 15-13. Head Coach Dee Conway’s squad rebounded with wins over Messiah and Fairleigh Dickinson University, but that momentum would not carry over into CAC play, as the Eagles dropped conference matches to Salisbury University and Catholic. A CAC win over Goucher provided hope for a tournament run, but a 3-2 loss in the regular season finale at St. Mary’s halted any momentum for the team. The Eagles fell, 3-0, at Salisbury in the CAC Quarterfinals, ending the season with a 12-10 overall record. Coach Conway returns several top players for 2007, but will need to find a replacement for senior hitter Johanna Carpenter, who closed her four-year career with 112 kills in 2006. With Hueber and Lutkenhaus providing stability on the outside, several pieces of the puzzle are in place for a successful run in 2007. With a successful recruiting effort, the Eagles will look to return to prominence in the conference and the region next fall.
