03/17/07 UMW Women's Basketball Tops NYU, 74-63, in NCAA Consolation Final
NYU took the early advantage, going up 6-2 in the opening minutes. The Violets led, 10-6, with 16:01 remaining, but the Eagles scored the next three points to take an 11-10 advantage with 14:58 left, and Debbie Bruen scored a three pointer and a layup to give UMW a 16-11 advantage at the 13:50 mark. UMW led by as many as 12, at 31-19, and held a 33-25 lead at halftime. UMW started the second half with an 8-3 run to up the lead to 15 at 43-28, but NYU responded with a 6-0 spurt that cut the lead to 44-35 at 15:25. The Eagles scored the next six points, with two jumpers by Ashton Mitchell and a layup by Lisa Tracy, to lead 50-35 at 12:37. After a pair of NYU free throws, Tracy hit a three pointer to up the lead to 16 points, at 53-37. The Eagles led, 65-55, with 3:50 left, but the Violets scored eight of the next 10 points to trim the lead to four, at 67-63, with 1:20 remaining. But Hickey scored five points and Bruen another basket in the final moments to give the Eagles the 11-point win. Senior Debbie Bruen closed her All-America career with a game-high 21 points, and added eight rebounds and six assists. Tracy scored a season high 18 points with seven rebounds, and Liz Hickey scored 14 points in 21 minutes with seven rebounds and five blocked shots. NYU was led by Stephanie Ryba's 19 points. All-America forward Jessica McEntee scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Violets, and guard Karen Bachman added 10 points and 10 rebounds. The victory for the Eagles gives the team 31 wins for the season, two more than last year's 29-2 squad, breaking the school record for season wins in the team's first-ever Final Four appearance. The Eagles jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead, led by all seven points scored by All-American senior Debbie Bruen. The Eagles stretched the lead to 10, at 27-17, with 6:31 remaining. But DePauw scored seven of the final nine points of the half to cut the deficit to five at halftime. DePauw continually went to All-American Liz Bondi, who scored 13 points in the first half en route to 28 in the game. The second half saw DePauw eradicate the lead by scoring nine of the first 11 points of the second frame. The lead switched hands several times over the next seven minutes, with DePauw leading by as many as four, and the score tied five times, including at 58-58 with 3:57 remaining. Bondi then made two key baskets, and a pair of Suzy Doughty free throws gave theTigers a 64-58 lead with 24 seconds left. Bruen then hit a three to cut the deficit to three, but DePauw hit three of four free throws down the stretch to ice the game.
UMW shot 51% from the floor, including 59% in the first half, but committed 23 turnovers, including 15 in the first half. Mary Washington (30-3) will face New York University in Springfield, Massachussetts on Saturday at 12:30 pm in the national consolation game. DePauw will face Washington (Mo.) FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team is poised to compete for its first ever national championship in the sport this weekend, as the Eagles face DePauw University on Friday in the national semifinals at 4 pm. The Eagles, who defeated #3 Scranton and #1 Bowdoin this weekend, enter play with a 30-2 overall record, and have won 26 straight games. Tickets for Friday and Saturday's games can be purchased for $10 for each session starting at 2:00 pm on Monday at the University of Mary Washington athletic department office through the close of business on Tuesday afternoon. Also, a spectator bus is being planned to depart on Thursday at 6:30 pm through the office of student activities. SPRINGFIELD, MA - University of Mary Washington head women's basketball coach Deena Applebury has been named as the NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association on Thursday night at the Final Four banquet. Senior forward Debbie Bruen was also named as an All-America selection by the WBCA at the banquet. Applebury has led UMW to a 30-2 record this season, and defeated #3 Scranton and #1 Bowdoin last weekend in Scranton, PA. Bruen leads the Eagles with 13.7 PPG, and also gave an excellent speech at the banquet representing UMW. The Eagles will take on DePauw University on Friday at 4 pm in a national semifinal that can be seen live on CSTV.com, and heard on D3Hoops.com. 03/10/07 UMW Women's Basketball Tops #1 Bowdoin, 64-59, to Advance to Final Four
The Eagles led early, scoring the game's first four points, but Bowdoin got a three pointer from Jill Anelauskas to take the lead at 12-11, and the Bears outscored the Eagles, 19-11, to close the half with a nine point lead at 31-22. Bowdoin upped the lead to 11, and held a 38-27 lead with 17:43 remaining. The lead stayed at 10 at 46-36 with 14:23 remaining, but UMW chipped away to cut the deficit to seven at 56-49 with 8:26 left. A free throw by Liz Hickey, playing with four fouls, and a pair of Hickey layups cut the deficit to two at 56-54 with 6:03 remaining. After a free throw by Lisa Tracy, Anelauskas hit another jumper to give Bowdoin a 58-55 lead with 4:45 on the clock. Katy Larson netted two free throws with 4:02 left, but Eileen Flaherty hit a free throw to up the Bowdoin lead to 59-57 with 2:54 left. Bowdoin would not score again, and UMW used a Hickey jumper and free throws from Leigh Kampman, Amanda Bates, and Lisa Tracy, with Tracy's pair coming with seven seconds left and capping the comeback. Hickey led the Eagles with 16 points, and blocked five shots and grabbed four rebounds. Tracy was also in double figures, with 11 points, and had seven boards. Katy Larson had eight points and six assists, Debbie Bruen scored eight points in 19 minutes despite playing ill, and Amanda Bates scored eight points with five assists and six rebounds. Kampman had six points and five caroms for the Eagles, who, with the win, break the school record for season wins, with their 30th, and run their win streak to 26 games. In a defensive battle that saw each team make just 16 field goals apiece, UMW grabbed an early six-point lead at 13-7 with 11:09 remaining in the first half. The Lady Royals went on an 8-0 run to take lead the lead at 15-13 with 6:41 to go, led by All-American Taryn Mellody, who had 13 of Scranton's 21 first half points. A pair of Tracy free throws and a steal and layup put the Eagles up, 17-15, with 5:45 left, and five points late in the half by Kampman gave UMW a 24-21 lead at the break. Scranton scored the first six points of the second half to take a 27-24 lead, but a three pointer by Kaitie Clarkin and a pair of Katy Larson free throws put the Eagles on top for good with 14:37 remaining. A pair of Allison Matt free throws with 23 seconds left cut the deficit to one at 46-45, but Bruen connected on a pair of free throws to up the lead to 48-45, and Scranton's final second desparation three attempt was deflected as time expired. In addition to her 15 points, Tracy added six rebounds and five steals, and Kampman scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds. Junior center Liz Hickey had eight points, 12 rebounds, and two blocks, and Bruen grabbed seven boards, including several key ones in the closing minutes. Mellody scored 19 for Scranton, but was held without a field goal in the second half. The Eagles will face top-ranked Bowdoin College in the sectional final on Saturday night at 7 pm in a rematch from last year's sectional semifinals in which Bowdoin won, 62-54. On Saturday, the Eagles took command early, making an 11-0 run early to lead, 19-6, with 11:26 remaining in the first half. UMW would lead by as many as 22 points in the first half, and led by 20 at intermission, 38-18. Junior point guard Amanda Bates was an early catalyst for the Eagles, with six first half points, as was sophomore forward Ashton Mitchell, who netted eight points and had two blocked shots in the opening frame. The second half saw a back-and-forth game, in which neither team's lead strayed for more than six points from the halftime margin of 20. Bruen scored 15 of her 20 points in the second half, including back-to-back three pointers to open the period. Junior center Liz Hickey added 12 points, including 10 after intermission, and junior Lisa Tracy added 14 points for the Eagles as well. Leigh Kampman led UMW with eight rebounds to go with her six points, and Mitchell and Katy Larson each scored eight off the Eagle bench. UMW held CNU's starters to 30 points in the game, and caused 18 turnovers. CNU was led by Shantel Burwell's 13 points, and Nikki Rowland and Alicia Bessey added 10 apiece for CNU. On Friday, junior Liz Hickey had 17 points and nine rebounds, while senior forward Debbie Bruen had 11 points and seven boards. Kimberly Ordille led Notre Dame with 10 points. The Eagles struggled from the floor in the opening minutes, but rebounded to shoot 42% from the floor in the second half. Notre Dame had eight field goals for the game, with three from ordille and two from Casie Hall. The Eagles outrebounded the Gators, 49-37, and caused 34 Notre Dame turnovers. MARY'S CITY, MD - Fresh off its 2007 Capital Athletic Conference championship, the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team saw junior center Liz Hickey named CAC Player of the Year and head coach Deena Applebury was named CAC Coach of the Year for the third straight year, as announced by the league on Tuesday. Hickey joined senior Debbie Bruen on the league's first team. Hickey, who is averaging 10.6 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, and is ranked third in the nation in blocked shots, with 3.9 per game. Applebury, who has led UMW to a 78-11 record over the past three years, has the Eagles in the NCAA Tournament for the third straight year. The Eagles, now 26-2 on the season and winners of 22 straight games, will await the announcement on when and where they will play in the NCAA Division III Tournament next week.

BOXSCORE 02/08/07 #14 UMW Women's Basketball Tops Gallaudet in CAC Action for 20th Win WASHINGTON, DC - The fourteenth ranked University of Mary Washington women's basketball team limited homestanding Gallaudet University to nine field goals in a 75-24 victory over the Bison on Thursday night in Capital Athletic Conference play. Freshman Brooke Davies scored a career-high 13 points to lead UMW, who recorded their 20th win of the season, marking the third straight year the Eagles have won 20 games. The Eagles led, 33-10, at halftime. Davies made four of five field goals, including all three of her three point attempts, and connected on both of her free throw attempts. Lisa Tracy scored 12 points for the Eagles, and Leigh Kampman was the third UMW player in double figures with 10 points and collected a team-high eight rebounds. Liz Hickey had nine points, seven blocked shots, and six rebounds, and Ashton Mitchell added nine points and seven rebounds. BOXSCORE 02/08/07 UMW's Baker, Bruen Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District Teams FREDERICKSBURG, VA - University of Mary Washington seniors Justin Baker and Debbie Bruen have been named to the Academic All-District basketball teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America in the district. Baker was named to the men's first team, and will be eligible for Academic All-America honors, while Bruen was named to the third team. Baker, who carries a 3.49 overall GPA as a business major, leads UMW in scoring again this season, and recently scored his 1,000th career point. After transferring from the College of William & Mary, Baker has been equally impressive on the floor and in the classroom, leading UMW to a 13-7 record this season. Bruen, who earned All-America honors on the floor last season, adds academic all-district honors this year. A psychology major, Bruen carries a 3.29 overall GPA. The reigning CAC Player of the Week, Bruen leads UMW in scoring for the fourth consecutive season. York jumped out to a seven point lead at 10-3 with 15:55 left in the first half. A 9-2 run by the Eagles tied the score at 12with 12:43 left. York kept the lead until 3:01 remaining, when Gina Cassadei's jumper gave the Spartans their final lead of the game at 27-26. The Eagles outscored the Spartans, 6-1, to close the half, and led 32-28 at halftime. A 9-0 run to start the second half gave UMW a 41-28 lead less than four minutes into the half. A pair of Liz Hickey layups and an Amanda Bates three pointer spurred the run. UMW went up 11 at 15:29 left on a Debbie Bruen jumper and kept the game in double figures from that point on. Bruen led UMW with a double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds with no turnovers. Hickey scored 13 points and added five boards and four blocked shots, and Katy Larson added 12 points. Lisa Tracy scored 10 points and grabbed sveen rebounds for the Eagles as well. BOXSCORE 01/30/07 #15 UMW Women's Basketball Beats Bridgewater, 89-81, in Road Overtime Matchup
Bridgewater led 66-61 on Jessica Young’s baseline jumper with 1:36 left in the game, but Leigh Kampman hit 1-of-2 free throws on the next possession to pull UMW to within four. Bridgewater then had a good luck on its next possession, but Shannon Scales’ 3-pointer from the corner just missed and Liz Hickey controlled the rebound for UMW. Amanda Bates then buried a huge 3-pointer and Mary Washington was within one, 66-65. Bridgewater failed to score on its next possession and Debbie Bruen hit two foul shots to put Mary Washington on top 67-66 with 36 seconds left.
Bridgewater sent the game into overtime when Katy Herr Lovell hit two free throws with three seconds left to tie the score, 68-68. Mary Washington scored the first eight points in overtime and Bridgewater was unable to recover. Kampman converted a three-point play to start the extra session and Bates drained a long 3-pointer for a six-point lead. Lisa Tracy then hit a short jumper off an assist from Bruen to put UMW up by eight, 76-68. Bridgewater cut the margin to four in the final minute on a 3-pointer by Lovell, but Mary Washington hit its free throws down the stretch to put the finishing touches on the 89-81 victory. Senior Debbie Bruen scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Bates added a season-high 17 points with four rebounds, three assists, and three steals, and junior guard Sarah Flanagan added 16 points for UMW. Bruen also eclipsed the school's career free throw record, raising her career total to 329 made and breaking the record previously held by Lindsay Stover from 1994-98. Shannon Scales scored 18 for Bridgewater, leading four BC players in double figures. The Eagles will host York College on Saturday at 2 p.m. in a key Capital Athletic Conference matchup between the top two teams in the league. BOXSCORE 01/30/07 UMW Women's Basketball Ranked Nationally in Top 10 in Five Stat Categories INDIANAPOLIS, IN- The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team is ranked in the top 10 nationally in four team and one individual statistic category, as was released by the NCAA today. The Eagles lead the nation in field goal percentage defense, at 29.7% allowed. UMW is second in the nation in scoring defense (45.4 PPG allowed) as well as scoring margin (+26.8 PPG), and are ninth in assists per game (17.5). Junior center Liz Hickey is fourth in blocked shots (3.3 BPG). In addition, UMW is 12th in blocked shots (5.2 per game), 13th in rebound margin (+9.7), and 17th in field goal percentage (45.0%). NCAA STATS SITE 01/27/07 #19 UMW Women's Basketball Tops Hood, 91-34, in Nonconference Play FREDERICK, MD - The 19th ranked University of Mary Washington women's basketball team defeated Hood College, 91-34, on Saturday in nonconference action at Thomas Johnson High School. The Eagles, winners of 12 straight, improve to 16-2 overall. Junior Sarah Flanagan led four Eagles in double figures with 15 points, and senior forward Debbie Bruen scored 14 points and seven rebounds. Liz Hickey and Ashton Mitchell each scored 13 points, and Lisa Tracy had nine points and eight rebounds for the Eagles. For the game, UMW shot 46% from the floor, while limiting Hood to eight field goals and 19% shooting. The Eagles will visit Bridgewater College on Tuesday at 7 pm in a matchup of teams that advanced to last year's NCAA Division III Sweet 16. The Eagles assumed their first lead of the game at 5-4, and never again trailed. The Eagles led, 38-27, at halftime, led by junior guard Sarah Flanagan's three three pointers and 13 points. Flanagan was 3-6 from behind the arc and 4-4 from the free throw line in the first stanza. UMW shot 43% from the floor while limiting Marymount to 33% from the floor in the first half. UMW held the Saints at arm's length throughout the second half, allthough Marymount cut the UMW lead to five at 59-54 with 3:51 remnaining. But a Liz Hickey reverse layup sparked a 15-2 run to close the game. The Eagles were led by Flanagan's 21 points (5-8 on three pointers), while Hickey scored 11 points and had eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Debbie Bruen had 12 points and seven rebounds for the Eagles, who run their win streak to 11 games. Marymount was led by Kathryn Wilson's 14 points and Terell White's 12. Catholic jumped out to an early lead, holding a 10-5 lead just three minutes into play. But UMW would limit the Cardinals to just six points in the remaining 17 minutes of the half, while scoring 43 points from that point. The Eagles were led for the third straight game by junior guard Sarah Flanagan, who scored 13 points, and sophomore guard Katy Larson, who had 12 on 4-4 shooting. Debbie Bruen had nine points and seven rebounds, and Liz Hickey had eight points and six blocked shots, with Ashton Mitchell and Lisa Tracy scoring eight apiece as well. Catholic was led by Shea Macdonald's nine points. The Eagles continued their torrid shooting, shooting 55.4% from the floor in the game (31-56), making 8-18 three pointers and 15-16 free throws. The Eagles limited Catholic to 26.4% shooting, including 4-22 shooting in the first half. UMW will host Marymount University on Thursday at 8 pm with first place in the CAC on the line. ST. MARY'S CITY, MD - The 18th ranked University of Mary Washington women's basketball team defeated St. Mary's College of MD, 75-49, in Saturday Capital Athletic Conference action. Junior guard Sarah Flanagan scored a team-high 17 points, while junior center Liz Hickey scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and senior forward Debbie Bruen added 10 points and seven rebounds. The Eagles outrebounded the hosts, 48-21, and had 27 assists in the game. UMW, after shooting a school record 62% on Wednesday, shot 42% on Saturday, and forced 24 Seahawk turnovers. Ashton Mitchell and Kaitie Clarkin each had eight points for UMW. St. Mary's was led by Stephanie St-Aubin's 17 points and Meghan Uglik's 16 points. BOXSCORE 01/17/07 #18 UMW Women's Basketball Downs Goucher, 91-38 TOWSON, MD - The 18th ranked University of Mary Washington women's basketball team shot a school record 63.2% from the floor, and set a Goucher Sports & Rec Center record with 11 three point baskets in a 91-39 win in Towson on Wednesday. Junior guard Sarah Flanagan scored a game-high 20 points to lead three Eagles in double figures, as UMW (12-2, 4-1 CAC) runs its win streak to eight straight. Mary Washington dominated form the opening tip, scoring the first 10 points, and then, after a pair of Gopher free throws, scored the next 29 points to lead, 39-2, with 5:49 remaining in the first half en route to a 49-10 halftime advantage. UMW shot 66.7 % from the floor in the first half (18-27), and limited Goucher to 3-33 shooting (9%). In addition to Flanagan's 20 points, junior forward Leigh Kampman and junior center Liz Hickey each scored 10 points, and Debbie Bruen, Ashton Mitchell, and Ashley Reed each had eight points. Junior guard Sarah Flanagan scored 12 points, and junior All-America center Liz Hickey added 12 points, seven rebounds, and four blocked shots. The Eagles led, 40-19, at halftime, limiting the Sea Gulls to 5-27 shooting from the floor. For the game, the Eagle defense held Salisbury to 20.3% from the field (12-59). The Eagles outrebounded Salisbury, 50-41, and caused 30 Sea Gull turnovers. A pair of free throws by Katy Larson and a layup by Hickey advanced the lead to seven, and Amandas Bates hit a three pointer at the buzzer to give UMW a 31-21 halftime edge. CNU chipped away at the lead in the second half, until cutting the deficit to three, at 49-46, with 5:45 remaining. But UMW would outscore the Lady Captains, 14-2, from that point on. The Eagles improve to 5-2 on the season. In a turnover filled first half, UMW led 17-14 at the half, but picked up the offense in the second half. UMW scored 19 of the first 22 points in the second half, and limited Ripon to three points in the first twelve and a half minutes of the second half. Junior Leigh Kampman had nine points and seven rebounds and junior center Liz Hickey had ten rebounds and four blocked shots for the Eagles. Lisa Tracy had five points as well. Senior Debbie Bruen led the Eagles with 10 points and six rebounds, who played without two starters. Sophomore Sarah Flanagan also reached double figures with 10 points and had a career high six steals. In a back and forth first half, there were eight ties, with York leading by as many as four points. UMW led at the half by three thanks to a three pointer by Amanda Bates in the waning minutes. The second half saw the Eagles continue to struggle from the field, as York led by as many as 11 points, at 44-33 with 5:44 remaining. The Eagles responded with a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to three at 46-43 with 2:11 left, but could not capitalize on several missed York chances, and UMW left with their first regular season CAC loss since the 2004-05 season. Marymount scored the first four points of the game, but would not lead again, as UMW scored ten straight points to lead 14-6, and wouldn't relinquish that lead. UMW upped the lead to 33-23 at halftime, and scored 13 of the first 15 points of the second half to push the lead to 18, and wouldn't look back. Bruen added six rebounds and five assists to go with her 18 points. Junior All-America center Liz Hickey scored 15 points and had seven boards and three blocks, and sophomore Katy Larson (shown) scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds for the Eagles. The Eagles led at halftime, 43-34, thanks in part to eight points from Hickey and seven apiece from Bruen and senior Lisa Tracy. The game Hornets remained tough throughout, but UMW made eight of 10 free throws down the stretch to claim the eleven-point win. Players were nominated by the Sports Information Directors at the various schools, who were contacted several times as the season wound down to remind them to make their players eligible. A total of 599 players were nominated nationwide. The ballot was then made available to SIDs, who voted for 10 players in their region. SIDs voted for six frontcourt players and four backcourt players and the top vote-getters at each position were named to the All-Region team. "We are thankful to the Sports Information Directors across Division III who took the time to nominate and vote to provide broader recognition to these worthy student-athletes," said D3hoops.com publisher Pat Coleman. "Their continued help and participation is integral to the All-Region team and everything else we do."
