UMW Women's Soccer Falls at St. Mary's in CAC Quarterfinals, 2-1
St. Mary's City, MD -- The St. Mary's (Md.) women's soccer team earned a 2-1 victory over Mary Washington in the opening round of the 2006 Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) tournament on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the fourth-seeded Seahawks improve to 12-5-1 overall on the season while the fifth-seeded Eagles see their season come to an end with a 5-10-2 overall record with the loss.
Mary Washington claimed a 1-0 lead 14:23 into the contest when sophomore forward Katie Patchett (Warrenton, VA/Notre Dame Academy) scored an unassisted goal from about 28 yards out with the wind.
That lead held until the 62:03 mark when sophomore midfielder Katie Klotz headed in a corner kick from senior midfielder Carolyn Amirpashaie to tie the contest at 1-1. The Seahawks used that momentum, and the wind, to score their second goal at the 73:15 mark. Freshman defender Karisa Carroll scored a goal almost identical to Patchett's in the first half, when she knocked in a wind-aided shot from the right side for the game-winning goal with Amirpashaie picking up her second assist on the afternoon.
