05/19/07 UMW's Kurti and Morse-Karzen Fall to Amherst Duo in NCAA Quarterfinals
The Eagles opened by breaking serve to take a 1-0 lead in the first game, but broken serves on both sides were the story of the day. The Eagles fell behind, 3-2, and dropped the first set, 6-3. UMW were broken to open the second set, but broke back to knot the score at one. Again trailing, 3-2, UMW scored one of the next three points to move the score to 5-3, but Amherst held serve to win the second, 6-3. The championship for singles will be played Sunday at noon, with DePauw's Liz Bondi taking on defending champ Emily Applegate of Washington & Lee. The Eagles jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, and, after being broken on serve, broke back to push the score to 4-1, and then grabbed the next two points for a 6-1 set win. In the second set, the Eagles broke CMS to take a 2-0 lead, advanced the lead to 4-1, and traded points to a 6-3 win in the second set. With the victory, the duo earns All-America honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, by advancing to the national quarterfinals. They become the first doubles All-Americans at UMW since Lea Schon and Ashley Knapp won All-America honors in 2001. BRACKET 05/06/07 #10 UMW Women's Tennis Falls at Washington & Lee, 5-0, in NCAA Tournament 3rd Round LEXINGTON, VA - For the second straight day, the 10th-ranked University of Mary Washington women's tennis team dropped all three doubles matches, but unlike on Saturday, when the Eagles came from behind for a 5-4 victory, third ranked W&L swept the Eagles, 5-0, in the third round of the NCAA Division III Tournament in Lexington. The Eagles close the season with a 22-3 record. UMW fell at one doubles, 8-3, and at two doubles, 8-1, before falling narrowly at three, 9-8, heading into singles. Katie Tabb defeated Katie Miglin, 6-3, 6-2, at two, and Kristen McClung downed Natalia Fugate, 6-0, 6-0, at four singles for the clincher. The Eagles close the season with a 22-3 overall record. Number one doubles team Stephanie Kurti and Becky Morse-Karzen will advance to the NCAA Division III doubles tournament at UMW on May 18-20. RESULTS 05/05/07 #10 UMW Women's Tennis Comes From Behind to Top Johns Hopkins, 5-4, in NCAA 2nd Round LEXINGTON, VA - The 10th-ranked University of Mary Washington women's tennis team dropped all three doubles matches, but roared from behind to claim five of six singles matches in topping Johns Hopkins University, 5-4, on Saturday at Washington & Lee University. The Eagles improve to 22-2 on the season. The Eagles dropped three close doubles matches to fall behind, 3-0, falling at one, 9-8, and at two and three, 8-6. The Eagles then got wins from Stephanie Kurti at one, 6-3, 6-4; Becky Morse-Karzen at three, 6-2, 6-2; Kate Malpeli at five, 6-2, 6-1; and Amy Sheetz at six, 6-3, 6-4. UMW's Natalia Fugate won the clinching match, winning 7-6(2), 6-4. The Eagles improve their record to 22-2 overall, and have won 16 straight. The Eagles will have the opportunity to avenge one of their two losses of the year when they face Washington & Lee on Sunday at noon with the winner advancing to the national championships on May 15-20 at Mary Washington. MARY'S CITY, MD - University of Mary Washington sophomore Stephanie Kurti has been named as the CAC Women's Tennis Player of the Year, freshman Danika Robison is the CAC Rookie of the Year, and head coach Patrick Catullo is the 2007 CAC Coach of the Year, in voting by the league's coaches. The Eagles were represented on the All-CAC first team with Kurti at one, Katie Miglin at two, Becky Morse-Karzen at three, Natalia Fugate at four, Kate Malpeli at five, and Amy Sheetz at six earning first team honors. In doubles, Kurti and Morse-Karzen at one and Miglin and Fugate at two were first team choices, and Sheetz and Priscilla Jamison were named to the second team. RELEASE 05/01/07 Morse-Karzen, Kurti Invited to NCAA National Doubles Flight INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The NCAA Division III women's tennis committee has released the singles and doubles participants for the national singles and doubles flights, and the University of Mary Washington has had sophomores Becky Morse-Karzen and Stephanie Kurti invited to play. The duo become UMW's first competitors in the individual portion of the tournament championship since Lea Schon and Ashley Knapp earned All-America honors in 2001. The individual championships include 32 single players and 16 double teams. Four singles players and four doubles teams are selected as alternates in the event a player or team becomes injured or unavailable. The singles and doubles championships will be held May 18-20 at the University of Mary Washington Battleground Complex hosted by the University of Mary Washington. The University of Mary Washington will face the winner of Friday's match between Johns Hopkins University and Moravian College on Saturday at Washington & Lee University at a time to be determined. On the other side of the sectional at Washington & Lee, Swarthmore College will take on Cabrini College on Friday, with the winner facing the Generals on Saturday. The two Saturday winners will meet on Sunday with the right to advance to the national championships, which will be held at UMW on May 15-20. The Eagles improve to 21-2 on the season, and will next play in the NCAA Division III Tournament on May 5-6. RESULTS 04/15/07 #10 UMW Women's Tennis Tops Regionally Ranked Washington for 13th Straight Win CHESTERTOWN, MD - Visiting Mary Washington, ranked 10th in Division III and fifth in the Atlantic South region, defeated host Washington College, ranked ninth in the Atlantic South, 9-0, in a women's tennis match this afternoon inside the Lifetime Fitness Center. The Eagles improved to 19-2 with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 8-9 with the loss. Mary Washington's line-up featured two regionally-ranked doubles teams and six regionally-ranked singles players. The Eagles took a 3-0 lead after doubles. The most competitive doubles match was at No. 1 where Becky Morse-Karzen and Stephanie Kurti, ranked seventh in the region, topped WC junior Allison Daciek and freshman Kellie Foster, the region's 27th-ranked doubles tandem, 8-5. At No. 1 singles, Kurti, ranked 18th in the region, bested Daciek, ranked 31st, 6-4, 6-2. Two of the singles matches went three sets. The Eagles came back to claim singles wins at three through six singles. The Eagles won at one doubles, 8-2, and at two, 8-5, and fell at three, 9-7. UMW is now 13-2 on the season. The Eagles wept all six singles matches in straight sets after winning at one and two doubles. The Eagles won at one and two doubles in the opener against TCNJ, winning 9-8 at one and 8-4 at two. The Eagles won at three through six singles as well, with Katie Miglin, Natalia Fugate, Kate Malpeli, and Amy Sheetz with wins in straight sets. Against Catholic, the Eagles swept all three doubles matches, 9-0, before winning all six singles matches in straight sets. The Eagles topped George Mason University, 7-0, in the morning, and then topped Towson University, 5-4, by winning all three doubles matches, in the evening. COMPLETE RESULTS 11/27/06 Men's Tennis Ranked 11th; Women 17th in Nation in FILA/ITA Fall Poll FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The University of Mary Washington men's tennis team has been ranked eleventh in the nation and the women's program has been ranked 17th in the fall FILA ITA national rankings, released by the ITA. The men are 11th in the nation, and second in the Atlantic South Region, behind only defending national champion Emory. Sophomore John James is ranked sixth in the nation, and second in the region. James and sophomore Randy Loden are eleventh in the region in doubles. The women are 17th in the nation, and fifth in the Atlantic South region. Stephanie Kurti is 16th in the region in singles, and Amy Sheetz is 19th. Kurti and Becky Morse-Karzen is ninth in the region in doubles. 10/14/06 UMW Women's Tennis Advances in Hampton Roads Invitational NEWPORT NEWS, VA - The University of Mary Washington women's tennis team has several individuals competing in main bracket singles and doubles at the Hampton Roads Invitational this weekend. The Eagles had six of eight players advance past Friday's action, as well as all four doubles teams. Action will continue throughout the weekend. Through Saturday's play, UMW's Kate Malpeli and Stacey Rickard have advanced to the semifinals, as Malpeli defeated Katie Bouret of Washington & Lee, 6-2, 6-1, and Rickard downed Rebecca Siron of Radford, 6-3, 7-5, and Tori Christmas of W&L, 6-2, 6-2. The Wilson/ITA Atlantic South Women's Championships at UMW will feature the top NCAA Division III schools in the region. The singles and doubles champions from this weekend's tournament advance to the Oct. 12-15 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Small College Championships at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers. TOURNAMENT WEBSITE 07/20/06 UMW to Host 2007 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis National Championships INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The University of Mary Washington has been selected to host the 2007 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis National Championships at the Battleground Athletic Complex on May 15-20, 2007, as announced by the NCAA on Thursday morning. UMW, which has one of the premier collegiate tennis facilities in the entire nation, served as host to the 2006 NCAA men's championships this past May. "After all of the many years our teams hit roads and played in championship after championship hundreds of miles from home, it's very rewarding for everyone who's ever been involved with the program to have the opportunity to host a national championship", said UMW Athletic Director and former women's tennis coach Ed Hegmann, who brought the school NCAA titles in 1988 and 1991. Team competition will begin on Tuesday, May 15, and continue through the championship match on Thursday, May 17. Singles and doubles play begins on Friday, May 18, and runs through Sunday, May 20. UMW was originally targeted to host the 2008 championship, but will host next Spring instead. 06/14/06 Eagles Climb to #18 in Final ITA National Ranking FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The University of Mary Washington women's tennis team finished the 2006 season ranked 18th in the nation - their highest ranking in over ten years - in the ITA national division III final rankings. UMW, who finished 15-9 on the season, saw sophomore Katie Miglin ranked 22nd in the region in singles, and Miglin and classmate Tallie Fugate were ranked tenth in the region in doubles.
