Kirk, Tripp, Hazlett Compete at NCAA Cross Country National Championships

WILIMNGTON, OH - The University of Mary Washington men's and women's cross country teams were both represented at the 2006 NCAA Division III National Cross Country Championships on Saturday in Wilington, OH. On the men's side, UMW senior Justin Kirk (Middleburg, VA/Loudoun County) finished in 254th place overall with a time of 30:27
In the women's race, UMW junior Ann Tripp (Richmond, VA/St. Catherine's) finished in 212th place overall with a time of 26:11. Junior Allison Hazlett (Pittsburgh, PA/Mount Lebanon) finished 225th overall, with a time of 26:20. There were 279 runners in each event.

UMW Men's, Women's Cross Country Finish in Top Four at NCAA Regional Championships
ATLANTA, GA - The University of Mary Washington men's and women's cross country teams finished in the top four at the 2006 NCAA South Regional Cross Country Championships on Saturday in Atlanta, GA. On the men's side, UMW placed fourth with 162 points, behind NCAA qualifiers Centre College (54 points) and Rhodes College (63), and Emory (79) among the 21 teams in attandance. For the women, UMW finished tied for third place with Washington & Lee University with 106 points, behind NCAA qualifiers Emory (38) and Trinity (TX) (64).
In the men's race, UMW's Justin Kirk (Middleburg, VA/Loudoun County) finished sixth overall with a time of 26:20, earned all-region honors, and will advance to the NCAA Division III national championships next week. Freshman Frank DeVar (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) was also an all-region selection after placing 13th with a time of 26:38. Chris Badolato (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) (41st - 26:58); Matt Downs (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's) (45th - 27:51), George Winslow (Richmond, VA/Fork Union Academy) (57th - 28:21)rounded out the Eagles' top five, with Matt Cash placing 59th at 28:34, and Jake Pattyson placing 64th at 28:43.


In the women's race, the Eagles finished tied for third. Junior Ann Tripp (Richmond, VA/St. Catherine's) was UMW's top finisher, in 8th place overall with a time of 23:37, and earns all-region honors and advances to the NCAA national championships next Saturday. She will be joined by junior Allison Hazlett (Pittsburgh, PA/Mount Lebanon), who finished 13th overall with a time of 24:00. Junior Cristy Falcone (Huntington, NY/Half Hollow Hills) was 15th, at 24:17, and senior Julia Rothlisberger (Annandale, VA/Woodson) was 20th, at 24:28. Freshman Nina Pfeiffer (Strasburg, VA/Strasburg) was 50th, at 25:52 to round out the top five. Kerry Carfagno was 59th at 26:23, and Mary Naylor was 72nd at 26:46.
Kirk, Tripp, and Hazlett will compete in the NCAA Division III National Championships in Wilmington, OH, next Saturday at 11 am.

UMW Men's, Women's Cross Country Finish 2nd at CAC Championships
SALISBURY, MD - The University of Mary Washington men's and women's cross country teams put foth a valiant effort, but finished just behind champion Salisbury at the 2006 Capital Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday in Salisbury, MD. On the men's side, UMW placed five points behind Salisbury (30-35), with York, Goucher, Catholic, Hood, and Marymount following. For the women, UMW finished nine points behind Salisbury (28-37), with Catholic, Goucher, York, Hood, and Marymount following.
In the men's race, UMW's Justin Kirk (Middleburg, VA/Loudoun County) was named CAC Runner of the Year after finishing first overall with a time of 25:32. Freshman Frank DeVar (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) was second overall, taking CAC Rookie of the Year honors with a time of 25:38. Matt Downs (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's) (8th - 26:37), Matt Cash (Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford) (10th - 26:42), George Winslow (Richmond, VA/Fork Union Academy) (14th - 26:53), and Chris Badolato (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) (15th - 26:58) earned second team all-conference honors for their top 15 finishes.
In the women's race, the Eagles welcomed back junior Allison Hazlett (Pittsburgh, PA/Mount Lebanon) and freshman Nina Pfeiffer (Strasburg, VA/Strasburg) for the first time since September, and both finished in the top 20. Junior Ann Tripp (Richmond, VA/St. Catherine's) was UMW's top finisher, in third place overall with a time of 22:20. Cristy Falcone (Huntington, NY/Half Hollow Hills) was fourth, at 22:30, Hazlett finished sixth at 22:41, and senior Julia Rothlisberger (Annandale, VA/Woodson) was seventh, at 22:48. Pfeiffer finished 17th, at 23:41.
Both teams will compete in the NCAA South Region Championships in Atlanta, GA, next Saturday at 11 am.

UMW Men's, Women's Cross Country Competes at Etown Invite
ELIZABETHTOWN, PA - The University of Mary Washington cross country teams competed at the Elizabethtown College Invitational on Saturday, with limited numbers preparing for the Capital Athletic Conference championships in two weeks. The men had several runners held out, and finished in seventh place in the 6K race. Freshman Frank DeVar led the men's team by finishing in 17th place, at 20:01. He was foillowed by George Winslow (20:59), and Jake Pattyson (21:04). The UMW women also had several runners held out, and finished in eighth place. Ann Tripp again led the Eagles, finishing in 13th place, at 15:37. Cristy Falcone finished just behind her, in 15th at 15:41. Mary Naylor, Kerri Carfagno, and Dana Capps rounded out the Eagles' top five. Mary Washington will compete in the 2006 Capital Athletic Conference championships in Salisbury, MD, in two weeks.

UMW Men's, Women's Cross Country Fares Well at Gettysburg Invite
GETTYSBURG, PA - The University of Mary Washington men's and women's cross country teams each fared well at the highly-competitive Gettysburg College Invitational on Saturday morning. The Eagle women took sixth place overall, while the men finished in fifth place.
For the women, Ann Tripp finished in sixth place overall, with a time of 23:31. Julia Rothlisberger was 16th, at 23:49, and Cristy Falcone was 18th, at 23:58. Mary Naylor came in 67th place, at 25:37, and Kerri Carfagno finished 69th at 25:42.
The UMW men were paced by Justin Kirk, who finished 13th, at 26:40. Frank DeVarr was 17th at 26:51, and Matt Downs placed 29th, at 27:07. Matt Cash finished 34th at 27:17, and Luke Wolverton was 50th at 27:40.
Both teams will be back in action next weekend at the Elizabethtown College Invitational.

LEHIGH, PA - The University of Mary Washington cross country teams both continued their excellent seasons on Friday at the Paul Short Invitational on Friday afternoon on the campus of Lehigh University. The Eagle men placed fifth among 25 teams, and the women took sixth place among 27 schools. Complete individual results and times are listed below for the Eagles.

UMW Men's, Women's Cross Country Win Roanoke Invitational

SALEM, VA - The University of Mary Washington men's and women's cross country teams continued to succeed in the 2006 season, as both Eagle teams finished first at the Roanoke Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The men finished first among ten schools, and the women placed first among nine teams.
For the women, junior Ann Tripp (Richmond, VA/St. Catherine's) finished first overall, with a time of 20:01. Junior Cristy Falcone (Huntington, NY/Half Hollow Hills) was sixth, at 20:34, and senior Julia Rothlisberger (Annandale, VA/Woodson) was ninth at 20:58. Mary Naylor (Warrenton, VA/Liberty) was eleventh at 21:31, and Kerri Carfagno (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) finished 12th, at 21:45.
The Eagle men were paced by senior Justin Kirk (Middleburg, VA/Loudoun County), who finished third in the men's race, at 26:57. UMW placed seventh through eleventh, with Luke Wolverton (Poolesville, MD/Poolesville) seventh at 27:58, Frank DeVar (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) eighth at 28:05, James Rock (Gainesville, VA/Brentsville) ninth at 28:21, Matt Downs (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's) tenth at 28:22, and Matt Cash (Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford) eleventh at 28:30.
The Eagles will be back in action on September 29 at the Paul Short Invitational in Lehigh, PA, at 3:15 pm.

UMW Cross Country Opens 2006 Season at Sea Gull Opener

SALISBURY, MD - The University of Mary Washington cross country teams opened up the 2006 season at the Sea Gull Opener in Salisbury, MD. The women finished second among eleven schools, while the men finished fifth among eleven schools.
For the women, who ran without 2005 NCAA qualifier Allison Hazlett due to an injury, the Eagles scored 62 points, second to host Salisbury's 47. Junior Ann Tripp (Richmond, VA/St. Catherine's) was UMW's top finisher, taking seventh overall, with a time of 23:34. Junior Cristy Falcone (Huntington, NY/Half Hollow Hills) was ninth, at 23:52, and freshman Nina Pfeiffer (Strasburg, VA/Strasburg) was eleventh, at 24:03. Rounding out the top six for the Eagles were senior Julia Rothlisberger (Annandale, VA/Woodson) in 13th, at 24:06; junior Mary Naylor (Warrenton, VA/Liberty) in 22nd, at 24:41, and freshman Katie Figura (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) in 31st, at 25:02.
The men were led by senior Justin Kirk (Middleburg, VA/Loudoun County), who took 18th, at 26:56. Junior Luke Wolverton (Poolesville, MD/Poolesville) was 28th, at 27:29, and freshman Matt Cash (Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford) was 35th, at 27:49. Rounding out the top six for the Eagles were James Rock (Gainesville, VA/Brentsville) in 37th at 27:53; sophomore JT Newcomb (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) in 46th, at 28:22; and freshman Jake Pattyson (Winchester, VA/James Wood) in 50th, at 28:34.
Both the men's and women's teams will return to action next Saturday, when they compete in the Lebanon Valley College Invitational in Annville, PA.
